re: 48 8-n
after my little tractor started blowing a lot of steam I pulled the head hopeing to see a rusted out head gasket. instead I found the piston liners going up and down with the pistons. To seal them up again I was told to coat the liners with locktite 640 but he did not say if I have to remove the liners and coat the hole thing or just the top little bit so as to not have to pull the pan and pop the pistons out. new rings would be nice but not now. thanks for any advice

don't know an easy way.you will have to pull liners out to clean them.while theyre out, take them to a good machine shop and have them knurled(knurling will increase the OD,use a fine knurl).then use that loctite and reinstall them.the combination of loctite and knurling should hold them in.only other way is to replace sleeves if block isn't hurt.good luck.just my 1&1/2 cents(taxes you know).wrenchman.

If you search the archives on this there was talk about this more then once of using JB Weld to hold these sleeves in place. I would think this would work alot better the Locktite. Tom

Brian, had same problem on my 9n.Had to pull sleeves and clean them up before using loctite. This only lasted a short time, when the engine would get hot they started moving again.Seems that whoever rebuilt my engine before me used aftermarket sleeves and pistons, and they were not of Ford specs.I finally had to scrap the block due to a crack and now have a block with the proper sleeves and pistons.
