Well, my father-in-law has decided to let me have his 1940 9N. He was going to give it to me but I felt that I was taking advantage of him so I will give him $1000 for it. It is in pretty good condition. It has all the original sheetmetal in great shape (no rust), toolbox, original lights including the tail lights, stabilizer bars and a back-blade. It even has the original grille. I can hardly wait to get it home. I will need to get the steering wheel recovered (4-spoke) as it is cracked all over. My '46 is pretty rough so this one will be a sweet ride. As far as I know, it ran good when he parked it 2 years ago. It has been outside uncovered so I know that I will have to tinker some and change all the fluids. It needs 2 front tires too. I hope the back ones have not rotted. I can hardly wait!

Being a fellow 1940 9N owner, I am trying to determine things about 1940 9N's. Would you be willing to share some insights about this tractor that were/are original? As usual I have lot's of questions but the last thing I want to be is a pain in the neck too:

*do you know the serial number?
*Is the dash cast aluminum?
*Small generator or the later large two brush one?
*Rear hubs hot riveted or smooth?
*What types of lights C.M. Hall? or sealed beams?
*What is the rear light? a "taurus" one? *Do the front spindles have the grease fitting facing forward or on the back side?
*is the key switch located? lower left or right dash?

I am trying to determine some details about the 39's v.s. 40's v.s. 41's and when items begain to appear on them.

Lucky you, and agree with Tyman's idea...he is correct. 9N'er

9Ner, I can answer a couple of these questions but will have to wait til I get the tractor home to look more closly for the others.
*do you know the serial number? I have it but forget where I placed the slip of paper I wrote it on.
*Is the dash cast aluminum? Gotta look
*Small generator or the later large two brush one? Gotta look
*Rear hubs hot riveted or smooth? Riveted
*What types of lights C.M. Hall? or sealed beams? The lights my fater-in-law has off the tractor and stored so I don't know yet.
*What is the rear light? a "taurus" one? read previous answer
*Do the front spindles have the grease fitting facing forward or on the back side? facing forward
*is the key switch located? lower left or right dash? I forget.....gotta look again.

I need to get my truck ready to haul and borrow my cousin's car hauler to get it home. I live in upstate NY and the tractor is in Detroit. I hope to get it home by June/July.

This will still be a work tractor but a lot more purty! It has not had a rough life in it's 61 years so it is not all worn out and in need of major overhaul. It has been sitting idle outside in the weather tho for at least 2 years maybe more. I have learned a lot fixing the old '46 that can be applied to the '40. That '46 2N is pretty worn but it still amazes me at what it can do. It still can pull a 2 bottom Ferguson AO-12 plow. It just likes to drink lots of oil. Now maybe I can tear her down and overhaul. Can't go without the tractor is why it aint done yet.
