Is this the exhaust manifold gasket?

Ever since I started using my 46 2N for finish mowing, I have noticed a louder-than-before noise from the exhaust manifold, near its outlet. The engine operates well under load and has plenty of power, but there is an excessive ammount of black soot on the head near the end of the exhaust manifold. I originally thought this was a bad connection between the manifold and muffler; replaced the muffler and clamp and gave the end of the manifold a good working over with a wire brush. I can't feel exhaust comming out of that connection but wonder if the louder "pop" is comming from the connection of the manifold to the engine. The noise is only noticeable when the engine is under load. While idling, it is barely noticeable.

Has anyone had a similar expierience?

The J&D productions engine rebuild video shows a corroded exhaust manifold like this.

If you take off, I bet there's a whole in the middle.

Ed....."my toy" developed a similar noise. I also thought it was from the manifold/exhaust connection. I found the top left corner of the manifold is leaking, has soot on it.

I looked through the archives on this when it originally happened. It was said that the exhaust gases can corrode the block/manifold. I hope to fix this soon but the dam@ job keeps getting in the way.

have fun....don t. .....
