I have what I believe to be a 1940 9N. When I removed the valves (one ex valve was broken) I found the exhaust valves had seals on them and none on the intake valves. Parts book showns the seals #8BA6571 go on the intake valves of 8N,8NAN ONLY. Does not show them being used on 9N or 2N. Motor was sometime in the past rebuilt by a pro shop who left out the valve retainer on this ex valve which caused it to break. I would think they should be used on the 9N also. Right?
Thanks Tom/Idaho

I guess my question was kinda vague, in that I should have said guides and not valves. Thanks Zane you gave me the reply I was looking for.

All the N engines are supposed to have valve guide seals on the intake valves. None on the exhaust valve guides.

Tom..... ....kinda depends, use INTAKE valvestem seals ONLY on the 1-piece valve guide style with adjustable tappet. Engine rebuild kits include 8-valvestem seals. Do NOT use on HOT exhaust valves.

It should be intuitive obvious that you can NOT use valvestem seals on the "mushroom" valvestem style with the 2-part valveguide that you haffta grind the ends or seats to adjust valve clearances. Tappet clearances are the same (intake = 0.010-0.012; exhaust = 0.014-0.016; cold) wheather improved retrofittable 1-piece guide or original 2-piece guide..... ...Dell
