It's been since the early 70's that I've messed with condensor and points. Killed way too many brain cells since then. I got a tuneup kit from the site here and when I pulled the distributor off, a small piece of copper fell out. I've looked in the manual and the picture seems to show a connection from the condensor mount to the breaker arm spring. Is this what I am missing? I have absolutely no juice to the plugs but I do have fire to the end of the coil. I tried to do a search before bothering the board with what is probably a dumb question, but with 21000 possible articles...
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ya gotta have that copper strip in place, but it doesn't have to be anything fancy. I cut a hunk off a sheet of copper I keep in the shop for making furniture nameplates for my 8N, and I soldered a hunk of #12 to the back of the strip that broke on my 861. Both have worked fine for years.

When the copper strip on mine broke several years ago, I took a short piece of #12 copper wire, fashioned it to fit and then beat it flat with a hammer so it resembled the copper strip that broke. It's been on about 10 years now. It works so well, I just stopped looking for a replacement.HTH..Ron

Thanks for the replies. It is a front mount on a 49 8n. I'll see if I can fabricate another copper strip to connect the condensor mount to the points mount. I assume it simply mounts to the same screw as the points spring.

Thanks again.

The copper strip from the points terminal to the condensor terminal MUST be intact, or you won't have spark.

SOME QUALITY breaker point sets have a copper strip that parallels the steel spring, and if you have an old set like that, you can make a replacement strip from the one on the points.

A length of 14-GA insulated stranded copper wire with a couple of eyelet terninals will serve the same purpose, until you can get a proper replacement, if you so desire.

Replaced the condesor and points about 2 months ago on my 49 front mount distirbutor.

If it is a front mount, there is a very thin strip of copper "tape" stretching from where the top of the points mount to where the condensor contact is screwed down (where the 4 nipple round can copper spring connects).

If this thin metal strip is missing (very delicate and could easily be torn off) then I wouldnt think you are going to get any juice to the spark plugs.

Still learning as I go and this might not help at all.

Is this a side mount distributor? If it is that strip of copper goes from the inside ring(on the post) of the distributor ( wire comes down from the round can coil to the outside of the dist) to the points. Then the condensor has a "U" shaped clip that goes on the same post on the points. Make sue the screw that holds the points is tight
