Someone posted a link to The Model Garage stories recently, and I've really enjoyed reading through them. Sent the link to my Dad (who was born in 1931), and he remembered reading them. He still has a 1944 Popular Science with one of the stories in it...

At any rate, I read this one today, which gives a pretty clear description of how an ignition system works. Thought it might be interesting reading for youse folks, too.

The problem with that statement "One end of the coil is grounded on the frame of the car." is that its not true for your N's or the majority of ignition systems. That "End" is internally connected and common to the "hot" battery terminal of the Primary Circuit.

Its those little things that confuse ppl.

The 32 ford v8 did connect the low side on the secondary winding to the cars frame,next year the switched this lead to the primary.It looks like the secondary voltage flows thru the battery or the condensor.Ford used this system but coils from other cars have the low side hooked to the coils case.I havent checked all makes though.

Should’a splained the inputs and out putts and not got into sum’in ya gonna throw away iffin its bad. Coulds talk ‘bout how the putter in yer car siffers all the info but we ain’t gonna werk on the putter so just tell me the inputs and out putts in what the putter sees instead of sum resistance value the putter never looks at, injunneers think we to dumm to understand. Lost me when I wuz think’in Shazam sum poor sum a Buick had to rapp them little wares a thousand times around a piece of Ihorn and git it in that little round can, what happens iffin he got to 900 waps and fer got were he wuz at, on yel what wuz you talk’in bout enny ways. Best he just told’em see this little wrench I kin do a lot with it and that’s what yer paid fer.
