Lacking Power

It has been a while since I posted here. That's because my 2N has been running great. Well until recently. It seems that my tractor has lost its power. It is so bad that it chugs along in 2nd gear. I cleaned the air filter and replace the oil bath. Not much change. I cleaned up some gunk around the governor that prevented it from getting to full throttle. That helped a little..more gas more power. But under load (a full manure bucket) it is still sluggish. Checked the fuel filter screens both at the carb and at the bowl. They were clean. Next I will try changing the plugs and the wires. Any other ideas?

Also, how does a 2N handle a post hole digger? Any tips on what to look or stay away from when buying or using one?

Thanks.

We, You need to make sure the "Tank" filter is not clogged, drain the gas and remove the Bowl Assembly, Clean both ports.

The front mount Dist is technically challenged by
the "retarded" primary coil connection, that’s the coiled spring that mates with a Screw Head. You must make sure this connection is clean, or best yet, Bypass it with a Jumper Wire. Points & Plugs are next Problem areas

I just got in the house after cleaning up about 18" of snow with my rear blade. I had great fun until I started losing power, which was accompanied by some backfiring. Thought about it for a bit and decided it wasn't getting enough fuel. I disconnected the fuel line at the carb and sure enough, just a small drip, drip, drip. I suspected the tank filter. Before plowing this evening, I had filled the gas tank- it was quite low and I filled it. That may have swirled up some gunk. With the tank full, I really didn't want to drain all that out to remove the filter. What to do... I decided to blow it out with my air compressor. I put about 30PSI on the compressor, and then blew it out from the carb back up through the tank. Immediately, I had a good stream of gas and was able to finish the snow plowing. I realize this may only be temporary- whatever crud that's in there will most likely clog it up again. But at least I know what the problem is and was able to finish the snow plowing.

Bottom line- remove your fuel line at the carb, point it into a can and make sure you have a steady stream...

You might check the charging system. I had an engine that I could not get power out of...eventually I figured out that the problem was with the alternator. It was only putting out around 12volts which was not enough to light the idiot light and just enough to keep a charge on the battery but not enough to keep the spark nice and hot. I do think though that it is prolly more likely to be the plugs. If they are more than a few years old I wouldnt even bother checking them...i'd just change them. Even if that doesnt do the trick at least you can be sure it's not the plugs. I taught myself to do this because in the past I have "checked" them and ruled them out of the bug list. Only to end up changing them after changing everything else and finding out it was the plugs afterall.

In the spirit of making sure you have gas before you start troubleshooting, you should get into the habit of taping the rotor to your forehad whenever you do anything to the distributor. That way after you have cranked the engine for ten minutes and finally remember you forgot the rotor...at least you will remember where you put it :-)

Good Luck

Kim

Do you have fresh gasoline? Keep tank full in
winter to cut down on condensation. Good luck!

Fairly new...It had about 1/2 tank of gas in it from a month ago..I topped it off w/ fresh. I am still thinking about putting in some dry gas to it.
