Can anyone tell me how many balls are supposed to be in the recirculating ball assembly? Also is there a method for assembling this unit? I cannot find anything in the steering gear servicing document in the how to's section about this particular part. I dissassembled it to clean it and check the balls and worm grooves for wear or damage and found it to be in good enough shape to reuse. I count 59 balls and it seems that there are 2 ball circuits in the block so one would think that there should be an even number of balls to split between them.

Thank you for your input and help.
Bob

Bob.....tho the book says it's not serviceable, that was 50 years ago.It is serviceable now. There is suppose to be 60 balls in the nut.We have the balls and the channels in stock.Just find yourself one 9/32 ball and put it back together. don b

I might be of some help here. I have a 1958 chevy 1/2 ton pick-up. In my shop manual these trucks use a recirculating ball assembly. It looks like the same set up as the n tractors. In the manual some assembly do not have an even number of balls. This manual also tell you how to take it apart and put it back together. If you are still having problems,I can scan the pages and send them to you.

Cant begin to say how many times I have peeled off the label that says NO USER SERVICABLE PARTS INSIDE or ventured beyond what the manual said was servicable. When they wrote the manual did they really think the parts would still be in service after 50+ years? As far as reassembly goes, trial and error always works for me. It cant be rocket science. Of course on the first whack you might end up with a steering box that only turns left, but by then you should have an idea how it goes together.

Well - looks like you got told that it is not serviceable. Well, man made it and man can fix it!! If'n there wasn't a replacement part for it then what they gonna do?? That's part of the challange that I like - fix what I am not suppose to be able to!

My IT manual (FO-4)clearly says in at least 3 places that the ball nut assembly is not servicable. To quote "NOTE: Do not disassemble the ball nut ssembly as component replacement parts are not available. If the steering shaft and/or ball nut are worn or damaged, renew the complete assembly"
Looks like you need to either buy a new part or locate a used shaft/ball nut assembly from someone parting out an 8N.
I think the part you need is available from this site (Part # Part No: 8N3575A) for '48 & '49 8N model years - $170 NOT CHEAP! Click the link below and scroll down to the right part number.
If it were me, I think I'd be looking for a used part.
Good luck!
Carl

Bob - you did a bad, bad, thing :-) The ball assembly is not servicable, and should not be taken apart. You have found the reason for this.

I know this does not help now, but any proceedure the operators, or I&T manual does not cover - ask first.

Good luck,
Dan

I've taken my late 8n steering ballnut apart twice now, to have the shaft welded at the machinists... I never did count the balls.. just put it back together and went..

Why did I take it apart?

Well I am a mecahanic. I figure if some other guy could put it together, I should be able to take it apart, clean and inspect it and then put it back together. Actually I did figure how to get it back together, but with the odd number of balls I suspect that I am not the first wrench to monkey with it.

So it goes . . . .

I"m like you. I take things apart and put them back together. One ball missing probably doesn"t hurt to much.

Ozlander,

Did you take your computer apart??

Sorry, just couldn't help myself!

It's all in good fun and yes, I did get myself in trouble in school for never passing up a chance for a joke!
