2N Oil leak at 3 PT hitch mount

We are the owners of a 2N purchased new in 1947 by my father. It is generally in good condition. Oil has begun to leak around the 3pt hitch mounts below the axle housings. I removed the PTO and it appears that the large bolts that go through the differential housing have worked loose, allowing the oil to leak. There does not seem to be any external damage to the casting. It also does not seem possible to tighten them through the PTO hole. I am reluctant to pull it apart until I know a little more about it. Has anyone seen this on other 2N's. Is it likely that there is any permanent damage? To the 3 pt hitch holes in the casting? To the mounting bolts? Or is it more likely that just pulling the axle housings and tightening the mounts will take care of it? Are there parts available to replace the mounts if they are damaged?

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks,
Dan Simon

Only way to tighten the lower link pins is by removing the rear axle trumpets so you can remove the cotterkey out of the castelated nut that is torqued to 150 ft/lbs. Replace seals and gaskets and shim rear axle bearings as reqd.

Highly recommend you get an I&T FO-4 repair manual. Good instructions and pixs. Not a Ford pub. Readily available at most tractor parts emporiums, sponsors of this great N-Board, www.n-news.com, even Ford/New Holland fer peets stakes. $25, cheep, gettcha one..... ..Dell

Thanks for the info. I have I&T books for all of our newer tractors and I will get one for the 2N. Sounds like a relatively simple job. I might as well put brakes on it while its apart.

Dell is right on. Pull it apart. It seems to be a big job, but when you are doing it, you get to know your tractor and appreciate it more. It is more fun when you do it yourself. Personal Note: Don't make your own gaskets.

This is a common problem on these tractors. Drainthe hydraulic fluid and pull the left axle trumpet and you can access the right side while you have the left side off. The 9/2 N has a straight-sided pin, while the 8N has a tapered pin. The 9/2 also has the external fitting with the smaller bolt that holds it on. Once you've removed the trumpet, you can remove the pins, clean the hole, do any repair work and reinstall and torque them down. If the hole is wallowed out or the pin is out-of-round, then take appropriate action to repair or replace. The biggest danger is waiting too long. The loose pin can crack the housing or wallow it out beyond feasible repair.
