Last week I posted a pic of a 9N/2N I "found". Owner will entertain an offer. What can I do to determine if the engine is stuck/or not worth repairing. I don't want to damage anything by just trying to jump it.
Here is what I know to be true.
1)Tractor has not run in at least 3 years
2)All fluids appear to be clear and at full level
3)Tranny does not shift out of neutral
4)Sherman shift lever moves easily with or without clutch in--dont know if this is normal
5)I dont want to put a lot of time/money to get running before I buy it
6)I dont know how to turn engine over by hand to determine if froze up
7)I dont want it just to part it out

What can I do to minimize damage before I try to get the tractor running? Thanks, Tim

Two thoughts, take out spark plugs, put a little down the spark plug holes and try rocking the tractor by back wheels or try turning on the PTO shaft. Don't forget to put the PTO in gear.

You probably already know this, but one thing I did NOT know is that if it hasn't been run in that long, it takes it a while of coughing and choking and gasping before it does finally start. So don't give up too quickly!!

Be sure to let us know what happens. This is really neat! :-) --Dawn

Depends on the as-is price, I guess. Stuck in neutral could be that the clutch disk has stuck to the flywheel and does not release. I would try taking the plugs out of the engine, pour a little oil in each cylinder, let it set a bit, then try to crank it over with a good battery. With no compression, it might do it. You could also try shifting the transmission while someone slowly rocks the tractor by pushing or pulling on the rear tires. If the fluids are clear as you say, no water in the oil, and vice versa, might be a decent gamble.

If the fan belt is tight you can reach in and try to turn the engine over with the fab blades. I do that on almsot all the tractors I buy to see if they are locked up or not. Also if it has sat that long I would pull the plugs and pour in about 1/2 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder. The trany fluid will loosen up the rings and prelube the rings and valve before you even turn the engine over. I just did that to a 9N I gotr in, it was stuck but now it turns over.

Be especially careful pouring anything into a cylinder. Liquid will NOT compress...and if you have fluid in it and crank it over you can damage the pistons/conn-rods, etc beyond repair. If you put oil in the cylinders, make CERTAIN that when you first crank it over that the spark plugs are completely removed. This will prevent serious damage due to hydrostatic lock.

You know I've heard that before but never have hurt an engine yet by haveing a hyd lock. The starter just doesn't have the guts to do any harm in that way. Now if you try to pull start it thats a differant story.
