Does anyone have any thoughts on how to install a shifter boot? Do I need to remove the plate? Boot is the style from YT's parts store.

Water is showing up in the gear oil.

I don't know if you have ever seen a cotter pin puller, auto stores have them, but it has a screwdriver handle and a shaft coming out with a hook on the end about 3/4 inch long.Heat the boot in some water as others say and then use the hook to werk it on,werks great.Used them to install rubber set windshields, that's how I found out about them.
Good Luck

I got the boot from Don in NC. It was very pliable and went right on my 48 8N. I didn't need to heat it or anything.

i like the inside-out trick, but i smear grease on the knob, boot and mating flange area. the grease adds an extra water seal for awhile, and doesn't apppear to get in the way. i think it prevent tearing of the new boot as well.

Am I missing something here? I don't see why the knob is an issue at all. On my 8N, the shifter knob simply unscrews from the shaft, so I don't see why you would need or want to try to put the boot OVER the knob at all. Maybe mine knob is unique?

I will be buying a new boot this spring so I am following this thread carefully. Thanks!
Carl

'Cuz lots of us have 9n/2N's, whose shift knob is part of the lever, it don't unscrew.

There seems to be two different boots one for a 9n and one for a 8n. Everyone must be git’em the one for the 9N witch izz a bear to git on. The one for a 8N izz around .350 tho bigger and reproduced by Dennis Carpenter. The # izz 8N7277 and izz no problem to install. Make sure the part # used izz a 8N7277 and not a 9N7277 if you git the DC made one it will go on EZ. I git mine from TISCO and it has the DC sticker on the package check with YT to find out if theirs izz a DC boot. I have plenty of'em in stock and will ship ya one.

Thank you for your generous offer!

I"ll try the hot water/inside out suggestions. If that fails, there"s also a tisco a few blocks away from my work in Minneapolis.

If you get one from Tisco, make sure it was made by Dennis Carpenter unless you want to go thru the same thing. don b

What I do is put a some hand cleaner on the boot opening and shifter ball. Slips right on and wipes right off.

OK. Here's what I do. I turn the rubber boot 'inside out' then slip it on the shifter UPSIDE DOWN. Slide it down to the bottom and keep shoving with BOTH hands wrapped around it until the boot is forced to turn itself 'right side out and over the round collar at the trans plate. Otherwise, it takes 2 people, LOTS of patience, and 4 sets of needlenose pliers to get the bottom stretched over the collar. Good luck!!. jim

Picture way too big. Might want to shrink them down to about 400 x 300. They upload a lot faster too. On your boot it just stretches around the base but you might want to drop it in a pan of hot water to make it a little more flexible. Some replacements are a lot more flexible than others. Mine only took five minutes of fittling with a small screwdriver to coax it onto the base,
