I need to buy a decent, but not top of the line bush hog. I have a chance to buy a 5 foot Howse for about $600. I wish I could buy a top of the line, but we are on a tight budget. Can anyone tell me anything about them, and are they decent?
Thanks
Tom

I also have a 10' howse 3 gear box/ 2 blade unit. Mowed 2 seasons with it with nothing more than a loose bolt here or there.

Have a 5' KK which is also 'economy' for 5 years now.. never had a moments problem with it..

My brother bought a 10 foot, 2 blade, 3 gear box Howse nearly 20 years ago. The only problem, from day 1, was that the slip clutch would slip to easy. A hole drilled through the slip clutch assembly with a soft 5/16 bolt made a shear bolt to supplement the slip clutch. This cutter has since seen many hundreds of rough acres on tractors up to 140 hp. with nary a problem except a shear bolt now and then. Some people have been telling us for 20 years that the Howse is a piece of junk and will fall apart at any moment! The Howse is also a fraction the cost of a similar name-brand cutter. You decide.----- -----

I bought a 5' Howse in 1993. Every summer I mow about 20 acres of horse pasture, some of it with multiflora rose, and, a little custom work. Honestly, it's been a good "hog" for me. The gear box has stood up to all that I've done, replaced the front sliding half of pto shaft and that's about it. My only criticism would be that the sheet metal is maybe a little light. I can't complain about it and it doesn't owe me anything but for my next one, I will probably upgrade to a "Bush Hog" brand.

Keeping the blades sharp or new is a major key to success.

We bought a used 6' Howse about 15 years ago, still going strong. I think you'll be happy w/ it.

Tom, Bush Hog would rather you call a Hico a rotary cutter, but C.J.Howse, I'm sure, would not mind at all.

I've had my HICO (Howse Implement Co) 5' for over 15 years and it has held up well and done yeomans duty so far. I'd buy another if I needed to. Steve

I've heard they are decent, medium duty cutters..

Just a thought,if budget is tight, and who's isn't,how bout find a used one and do a little rebuild on it..they are easy to work on.. I bought a bush hog brand for a little of nothing, had some rust thru around edges and leaked badly..a few hours of welding, about $4 worth of seals for the main shaft and $45 for a new set of blades.. Deck is heavier now than it ever was when new, including purchase price,I've got less than $100 in it total..

My wife looked at me like I was crazy when I had this thing torn apart in my shop..she should be used to it by now 8^)

We also have a Howse 5" hog. We"ve had it for 8-10 years now, still going strong. Like OH Boy said, it does leave a little bit of a windrow, but not that much. It works well for us.

I have that same bush hog and it has served me well. I used it to hog out my 12 acre building lot when we bought it and it also served as my mower for a couple of years afterward. I hit stumps, rocks, rolls of barbed wire, and all kind of stuff with it when I was clearing the lot off. Nothing ever broke on it.

I got to where i did not like it as my mower, however, it leaves the clippings in a kind of a windrow and found this was killing my grass underneath the clippings. Then I had bare spots in the grass.

I got a 6 foot King Kutter rear discharge mower to do my finish mowing with and am much happier with it.

I still have the Howse Bush Hog and use it on occasion when things get away from me and get too deep for the finish mower.
