Johnny won't crank

Hey guys. Didn't think i'd be posting this but, my tractor Johnny hasn't been run in about 2 months. It's getting cold out here in Iowa and i went to freshen up the antifreeze in the tractor which was only good for -10 (perfectly fine in NC when I put the antifreeze in before I got my job here in Iowa). Now, I want to circulate the coolant and get a good mix, but I can't get it to crank. I have verified good, hot, snappy blue spark a couple different ways. Newly rebuilt engine. Tractor is inside an unheated storage building. I disconnected the air intake pipe and sprayed Starter fluid directly into the carb mouth and I don't even get a pop. Freshly charged battery on 6V system. I've rapped on the carb and made sure the fuel was on. I even took the spark plugs out but they weren't wet. Almost like there might be some sort of blockage in the (new) intake manifold. Any ideas on what I can do before it gets much colder? Thanks.

Jeb

I was just wonderin how you got to Iowa! Seems like the Jeb that sold me my 2N seat (still in primer, thank you) was a southern boy. Wazzup?

Hey there 6N'r!

Yeah, I was looking for a new job since last October (got fed up with some of the upper level folks at my old one) and a job in the Ag division of Vermeer opened up out here in Iowa. I took it as a sign to move on to bigger and better things so now instead of tractors, backhoes, and loaders, i'm working on Trailed disc mowers and stuff like that. Same Jeb, same Johnny, just new location and colder weather. I'm still trying to identify the seat hinge that was bolted to the seat I sent you. I have found only one other person who has one like mine. Aparently it was pretty rare and not well marketed...no makers name or anything.

As for starting, I can't really jump it as it's in the back of a 12 x 22' storage building. It turns over fine and I get good suction and pressure with my finger in the spark plug hole. Maybe I should buy yet another set of plugs for it. I started with a set of H12's but couldn't get it to crank, so switched to AL437's which are in it now. Still have the H12's. Might not hurt to have a backup set of 437's though. Guess I need to be more proactive at cranking it every month now. I could have sworn I added Sta-Bil to the fuel last tank, but i might have missed a tank. I'll be sure to pick up some more Sta-bil and some Heet when I get the plugs.

Hey, don't feel bad...mine won't start either. No time to work on it right now and realistically not till spring at this point. Saw a pic of you sittin on your tractor a few weeks back. Gettin to like the all gray tractor. Kinda sets it off from the 8N's. Good luck with that new job! Sounds interesting. Good luck with the weather too! Lots of nice tractors down that way! I'll shoot you a pick when I get the seat finished and on the tractor.

Ok.. you say you have blue snapy spark as it turns over.. We'll take that as fact for now.

Rough check for compression.. crank eng over and put your hand to carb mouth... suck down? Got some compression.

I think I'd get a helping hand and jump the starter with 12v... and have some starter fluid ready... Should HAVE to start if timed right.

Take a heat gun or a good hair dryer and carefully get the carb and manifold nice and warm, then try to start it. Sounds like you may have some water in your gas and it could be frozen, blocking the flow up through the manifold. There is a product, Heet, I believe it is called, that keeps water from freezing. Always keep some in the gas tank.

I can get gas to come out of the carb (flooding) when i want to, so I doubt that it's a fuel issue getting to the carb. Still doesn't explain why I don't even get a pop, cough, or wheeze on starting fluid.

What weight engine oil are you running? Does it turn over well by the starter motor? If it doesn't turn over fast enough, there won't be enough vacuum to get it to pop even with starting fluid. I run 5W-30 in the winters up here and makes for pretty easy starting.

The problem doesn't lie in getting gas to the carb, it is getting the gas from the passages in the carb up through the manifold. You can flood the carb all day long with a clogged jet. Pull the carb and turn the engine over while holding your hand over the opening of the intake manifold. If you have vacuum, then you should be sucking gas, but not if the gas can not make it through the carb jets.

Jeb..... ...-10F anti-freeze protection would be slushy but it won't freeze and crack yer block.

As fer not startin', put-inn NEW SPARKIES. AutoLite AL-437, gapped 0.025".

Heres the deal, they've been flooded and the center ceramic insulator has been contaminated with invisable sparkie leakers. Once you gittchur engine up to runnin' temp (30 min) you can re-install just 1-flooded sparkie at a time and burner clean. Pretty soon you've gott 4-cleaned dry sparkies, ready for the next time you foul flood yer engine..... ....Dell

Well, your camshaft lobs have got up and walked off. all your intake valves are stuck open, there"s a rats nest somewhere in the intake, or it is seriously out of time. It should at least pop with starter fluid. Keep us posted.(would battery in backwards cause this? I"ve seen stranger things!)
