Tonight I FINALLY finished one of my scripted 19" front rims that I picked up at the antique tractor boneyard a few weeks ago. I never knew old paint could be so hard to wire wheel off! There is minimal rust pitting, and I have coated the rim in phosphoric acid after I took the pic below to convert any nasty rust still hiding in the bottom of the pits and in the cracks and crevases. I hit the inside where it is usually pretty rusted with a good coat as well. After it dries, I wil lightly sand it smooth, primer with Rustoleum Auto Primer, then paint with Tisco Ford Medium Gray spray paint. I will post the finished pic later.

Learn something new everyday. Been around Ford tractors since they were new. Did not know the Ford logo was on the wheels. I have one wheel, on one of my Fords, that looks absolutely correct and says IH.
Wonder how Tisco paint compares in looks and quality to NH? I believe there overhaul parts are about as good as there are. Mike-Iowa

I too have a 51 8N that I purchased, 6:00X16" tires that came to me on IH rims. Yes they are identical. Standard style of the day. Likely the original owner got a deal at the local IH store. And You too will find 16" rims with the Ford logo, got some.

Mike - the Ford script was only on the 19" rims for a few years - so finding one is rare. To find one in such good shape is even more rare.

The Tisco paint is ok for a "poor mans" paint job - which all of mine are. They will not hold up as long as those $100 a gallon paints will - but is a dead ringer to the original Ford Grey color, and is only about $6 a spray can :-)

Dan,

When I got my 8n, it came with three 19" wheels. I picked the two best ones and after sandblasting, was pretty excited to find the Ford KH stamp on one of them. It was pretty faint and I was careful not to get any glazing putty in the scripts. After I got the primer and paint on however, the script completely dissappeared. Oh well, 50 years from now when somebody else decides to restore the tractor they will be suprised to find the script like I was. I still have the third "spare" in the shed which I never sandblasted, so it may have the script also. I need to find a three wheeled 8n to go with it.

Looks good Dan! The original paint on my rims was very tough. They must have baked the heck out of'em. I used a combination of wire cup & sandblaster to get them clean. They looked so good w/ new paint I hated to turn them over to the tire guy.

Wanted to ask if the rims are riveted to the centers.

BTW, just got my N-newsletter this week. Nice article!

Jeff

Jeff - the backs of the rims are not riveted to the edge part. It looks like it is spot welded, but I cannot see any welds. Here is a pic of the back of the rim.

Thanks for the kind words on my article, I was pretty pumped about it.

HTH,
Dan

Until now I thought all K-H front wheels were riveted. I'm looking to find a match to my riveted one.

It is rare to find a set of original Ford scripted 19" front rims - it is even more rare to find them not bent up or with deep rust pits in the metal, it is even more rare still to find a set with good inner tube stem holes that are not corroded out. Now, taken all of this, you can imagine just how hard it was to keep a straight face and look disinterested when the boneyard guy told me he would take $20 for them - "Well - I guess I'll take 'em cus I really need 'em..." :-)

I don't even need them, heck I have two sets already sand blasted, primered, and painted sitting in my garage now - but there was just no way I could walk away from that deal. Besides, I need something to keep me busy while I am waiting on my next project...

You think they look nice now - just wait until you see the finished product!

Ya need to buy this 1939 9N I have for sale Dan. That will keep you out of trouble for a looong time. It has double lined fenders and everything. Granted they are a little beat up but that ugly gold paint kept the rust from getting to them.

I am starting to feel the need to take a road trip down south and might as well pull my trailer while I do it so let me know if you are interested. I have a load of pictures I can send you.

Dan, Your "next project" should reach you tomorrow or Friday. Too bad you live so far away. I'd love to have a set of 19's for my Jube but shipping might be a bit much, eh?

It's kind of like having great works of art just "hanging around!" I can only grin in delight, thinking of your response when the guy said he'd let you have them for $20! How extremely, totally cool! You know, you'll just have to get another tractor so you have something neat to put them on!!

Now THAT'S an argument I haven't used yet.... I have all sorts of 'odds 'N' eNds pieces of tractors I could build more tractors around. If just used the Shermans, Everetts, and the Howard, I could have me at least 10 more!!. LOL
