Well - if you have converted your tractor to 12 volts, just hook it up like Ramrod instructed. If your tractor is still 6 volts, and if you spent the BIG bucks and got a 6 volt/12 volt timing light, just flip the selector to 6 volts and hook it up per Ramrod's instructions. If, like me, you got the cheaper 12 volt only, and you have the original 6 volt setup on your tractor, you need to drag the 12 volt battery out of your car, sit it right next to your tractor, use jumper cables to hook the positive terminal of the 12 volt battery to a good tractor frame ground source (NOTE - this is if the tractor is still a stock POSITIVE ground setup!) then hook the timing light directly to the 12 volt battery per Ramrod's instructions.

Good luck,
Dan

Red wire to battery pos, black wire to battery neg, sense wire clamps on to #1 spark plug wire.

Is this for a six volt system or is it the same for twelve? Barry

It will be the same, but only IF your timing light works on 6 volts.

Come to find out , it's not a timing light , but rather a Sears-Multi functional metere. Can run tach( which is what I need to know how to hook up so I can check idle RPM and top RPM)dwell, and a buncjh of other stuff I haven't the foggiest idea about. For now I'd settle on know how to hook it up to check RPMs. Any ideas?

If your tractor is a later-model 8N, with a "side-mount" distributor, you will have access to the terminal on the round-can ignition coil that is connected to the distributor, and there will be a timing window in the flywheel housing, and a timing mark on the flywheel.

If it is a 9N, 2N, or earlier 8N, there is no access to the distributor side of the coil, nor is there a timing window.

Post back and let us know what specific tractor you have, and whether it is original 6-Volt (+) ground, or a 12-Volt (-) ground conversion.
