Like Mitchp said, in the right soil they do a nice job of digging potatoes. Indeed, I have heard them called a potato plow.

you can use them to dig potatoes too, it'll open the row and throw dirt/potatoes out both sides

Middlebusters are a normal tool of farming especially in low flatlands of CA, AZ, FL and other states where produce farming and flood irrigation go hand in hand. Middlebusters are normally pulled in twos or multiples of two. As said, they bust in the middle for a trench and deposit soil each side for planting (hilling).

around here we call those ganged up things chisel plows.....and as far as I'm concerned there is no better way to perform the primary preparation (initial plowing)for planting. The biggest problem is with a minimum requirement of 12 hp per chisel it doesn't take very many.....two in fact.....to reach the capacity of an N tractor. And for me....two is almost as bad as only one! hehehe....

A middlebuster is, as the name indicates, a chisel type plow that busts open one furrow per pass by displacing soil to both sides of the furrow....hence it gives the impression that the soil was "busted" right down the "middle". As a cultivation tool its pretty much worthless but as a trenching tool.....in the right kind of soil....it can be fairly effective. Usually the shoe is interchangable with options ranging anywhere from a narrow chisel like tooth to an elaborate wide spiralling shoe with sweeps to both sides. I have used one to "weed" between rows of vegetables....but this requires a good deal of forethought and planning, neither of which I am very good at. Not to mention it can take forever at only one row at a time! I've also used one as a chisel in my road base pit to bust loose caliche so i can scoop it with my rear mounted bucket...but don't try this with a regular middlebuster shoe....you'll turn the point under faster then you can whistle Beethoven's Fifth symphony!

Deep tillage, it breaks up compacted soil that is deeper than a plow will reach. I have heard some say they used them for cutting shallow trenches too.
