Just found this sight, and sure like what I see. I've got a 52' 8N the that is near and dear to my heart. I was raised on a Ford 2000 though and, not having live lift has been a big adjustment for me. Since buying the 8N I have always wondered if there was, or is, any kind of conversion, or add on kit that would give it live lift. Probably a dumb question, but if such a thing can be done, if figure this is the place to find out. Thanks

I have never tried this but have been mulling it over for a long time and this seems like the time to let it out. I think that live hydraulics could be achieved on the N tractor by adding a belt driven pump to the engine belt and plumbing the pressure line into the auxillairy hydraulic outlet in the right front corner of the hydraulic pump of the tractor and having an intake hose plumbed from one of the drain plug holes in the bottom of the transmission or lift or any of a number of other places where an intake supply of oil could be tapped for the belt driven pump.

I believe live hydraulics could be had even without the PTO being engaged. This would make it possible to raise that bush hog without the blades flying around and intemidating everybody within a half mile of it.

I had similar thoughts a while back while bush hogging with the 8N and a live lift would have really helped a couple of times. I also thought that a "fully restored" Model A with a late model fuel injected 5.0 engine would be cool, but then it wouldn't really be a Model A anymore, would it???

Hey, as long as NC Andy's check book holds up, why not go for it big time. As long as we are running lines for power steering why not run another line back and put a hydralic motor in to replace the PTO. With a control valve and enough pump out put this ought to give you ultimate control of PTO speed with no relation to ground speed. Something like a Char Lynn 104 series ought to do it. Ought to make mowing a pleasure. Of course a pump with that much flow might be too much drag on the engine but heck we could round up a Funk conversion and a 101 horse flat head V8.

Just stop in with your check book and we can start on Monday. Of course somewhere before the final bill it will get hard to call it an 8n any more but what the hey progress got to cost somebody something.

Your mileage may vary

ZANE, When you build this thing bring those hydraulic hoses past the steering shaft and add a char-lynn unit to the steering. Double the fun!

"ZANE THANG TWO" Soon to be on the market for all N's.

If you do it according to Zanes plan you might want to block off the oil supply tube that runs vertically from the bottom pump to the top cover.

The way I am thinking you don't want to change anything about the original hydraulics including the oil passages. The way the N hydrualics are made all you are doing when you move the control handle is you are closing a passage was that makes the oil go up the tube. The oil that is in the tube would also go up in the same manner if the oil was supplied at the auxillary port instead of the original pump.

Would this aux pump have a pressure similar to the original pump? If it was significantly more, wouldn't this put too much pressure on the orig system? Would it be possible to disable/disconnect the input/output from the original pump and plumb the new pump into the system??

nothing is impossible

some things just cost more and take longer than others

if you had an NAA for a parts donor; or maybe a front mount pump and some valves and plumbing; and most importantly; a check book that could stand the strain it could be done.

on the other hand, there are also some things you learn to live with

your mileage may vary
