Is it possible to use a generator in a 12V system ? Perhaps a 12V generator ?

It would look more original and give me 12V perks.

Dumb question?

You can use a 12V generator and do a conversion similar to the 12V alternator conversion, but you would not have the "advantages" of an alternator. i.e charges at much lower rpm, puts out a lot more current which causes your battery to recover much faster, generally less maintainance and much cheaper to fix when it does need attention. If you want originality, I would stick with the original 6V generator. If you want 12V, I would go with the alternator conversion. Good Luck, whatever you decide.

I've done twelve volts with a generator on a flat head six Dodge with salvage yard parts out of a later model. Only did it because that engine was so weezy from low compression it needed the help and got so few miles that it wasn't worth a rebuild--single axle dump truck that only ran in the spring when it was time to move manure. If you have got to have twelve volts--and unless you have some electrical load not original to the tractor there is no reason six volts won't do it if you maintain it--a generator will work fine if you remember you've got to do the rest of the twelve volt dance like coil, and a regulator to match the generator. Also, when you post the twelve volt trouble guestions here you will need to say which one of the dozen or so possible ways you did the conversion.

your mileage may vary

An electrical shop, that repairs starters and generators, can convert a six volt generator to produce twelve volts. I had a friend that had one done for a H Farmall. It worked good. You can still use your six volt starter.
