I went back to the tractor yesterday and, of course, there was gasoline which leaked onto the grass. Luckily, my intake was bone dry. I removed the carb, turned the float needle back the right way. Even after tapping on the bottom of the needle with a wrench to "seat" it, I still had no luck. I called the local tractor shop here (where I bought the rebuild kit), and their carb rebuilder said my problem is common to old Fords, and that they still cannot get a brass-tipped float needle. Anyway, I am taking the top half of the carb, with the needle and seat, to them tomorrow morning. They said they will give me a new needle and seat. I suppose they will let me know if I am missing a spring clip to the float. I hope this will finally resolve my problem. Thanks for the help.

This is the time of year people throw their old lawn mowers away. If you can find one just take the carburator off and see if you can make some good use of the needle and seat and spring pieces.

I am pretty new at this Ford N stuff but I learned the hard way and the elder's here will tell you - ALWAYS shut the feed off at the glass bowl. It is even best to shut it off while the engine is running to let it burn off some of that gas.

Hi Tom,

I rebuilt the carb on my Jubilee and had the same problem as you. I took it back apart and put the old, brass needle back in; still had the same problem of gas leaking out of the carb when not in use.

I finally found a simple solution to the problem; I just turn the gas off at the glass bowl fuel filter when I am not using it. It doesn't leak when the tractor is running.

HTH. Rick

I wish I'd kept the brass needle, but I threw it away when I finished the rebuild and cleaned up my work area. Maybe I can find a brass float needle somewhere if the local tractor place cannot help me. thanks for your help
