After my 49 8N gets to a warm operating temperature I've notice the oil level drops to the low side and then the tractor just dies. I thought maybe it might be the ignition switch and so I replaced it but that didn't cure the problem. I've just about decided to shoot the thing and put me out of my misery. I'm thinking low compression which I have not checked yet. Any ideas?

Might want to check the point gap also. The points in the front mounts sometimes slip together. It will work for a little while then die out when the tractor get's hot.

Just something quick and cheap to check.

There is a big difference between running poorly and won't run or won't start. If you are getting it to start we can assume you begin with gas, air, spark and minimal compression. Then one of those things stops being a player. The most likely is spark. I agree with bg that the coil and condensor are first checks. They fail as heat builds. If your problem is gas then you need to ask why you have it at start up but not after a short bit. I remember a post where a gentleman had a bad fuel valve. The valve would leak enough fuel into the line after a short bit to allow for a start up but then it would die and not start for several hours. Point being check for good fuel flow and air flow.
Does it run rough then die, or just suddenly cut out?

How long does it take to get warm? If it around 15-20 min, it probably is your coil heating up and the windings opening, hence, no sparkies.
When it quits the next ime, see if there is any spark to the plugs.
If not, it is the coil.

Are you talking about oil pressure? It will normally drop once the engine warms up. The dying is probably coincidental to the oil pressure drop. Replace the coil and condensor and see if that cures it. Also, make sure all electrical connections are clean, bright and tight, like Dell says so the sparkies all work right.

I see from previous posting - you have replaced plugs, plug wires, dist cap, points, rotor, and now the ignition switch. bg is right is suspecting the coil, maybe even the condenser, With those changed you have everything electical R & R'ed! I did not go back too far, so I have a few questions for you. What is the voltage of your electrical system 12 or 6 volt.

If 12 volt battery,
1) What is your coil (6 volt or 12 volt)?
2) What is the electrical hookup for your coil from the ignition switch ( is it direct? do you have a ballest resistor in-line to the coil? What type?)

And take one simple measurement please. Connect your voltage test meter (+) to the coil input terminal (where the wire from the ignition switch connects) and meter (-) to a good ground. With the points closed and the ignition switch 'on' read the volt meter. Tell us what it reads. Don't forget to turn the ignitin switch off after getting your reading.
