I just went back and checked my older(1990 and 1953) I&T manuals and they both list 343593 as the first number for 1951. My Ford FAQ's pulled the number from the 1995 version. It just may be that the 363593 was a typo, and if so, did Peterson & Beemer pull their figures from that same I&T version? The plot coagulates....

I have 8N359567. If you tell me where the casting dates are located I can check tonight and see what it says

The only one I could see this morning was the engine block. It appears to say C51. There is quite a bit of rust in that area though so right now is very hard to read the letter. It may be a D. The 51 is very clear however and I am assuming that is the year. I am starting the cleaning phase prior to a repaint so maybe I will get some more details later on.

Hi bg, John,

I should have more on this after this weekend. I have some people with tractors between 343,593 and 363,593 checking the casting dates.

Til then,
Larry

When I originally listed the serial numbers on my page a couple of years ago I used the 363,593 number for beginning 1951. At that time someone questioned it, and they convinced me enough that I changed it to 343,593 and accepted it as fact. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who or what documentation provided the "proof", but at the time I checked every resource I could find. I do, however, have a '51 8N in the shop right now with the serial number 370,905 and the casting code on the block indicating April 9 '51. The tractor would have been assembled and numbered sometime after that casting date. If the beginning number for '51 was 363,593 they would have spent the first 3 and a half months (or more) of the year making only 7,000 tractors. That seems highly unlikely, but I suppose anything is possible.

I've posted this info before, but for the record books, my 8N is numbered 351766. The aluminum(?) plate on the bottom of the center housing or whatever it is called has the date 7-1-49 cast into it and the casting mark on the block is "8N-B"
Surely they didn't cast this plate in the middle of '49, then wait around a year and a half before throwing it on an 8N. . .

You're right. Shoulda thought of that. If anyone knows of anything else to help date this thing and help put the serial no question to bed, I'm all ears.
