It May Be A Generator Problem

My '49 8N only had about 115 hours use on it when I bought it from a black gentleman in Louisiana in 1989. He and his sister bought it new in Sept. 1949. (have paid paper work) They only use it a couple hours a year to plow their gardens, than it was washed and cleaned and put under cover.(see story in Online Stories how I came about this tractor) My question here would be the 6 volt generator charging system. The battery seems to run down when in use. I have to replace the battery every couple years. I have removed the generator and taken it apart. The "brushes" are very good, but I find the cloth wrapping on the wire winding has rotted away in many places. Would it be best just to remove the old cloth wrapping and rewrap with black electrical tape?
Another question... I get "continuity" from all
connections.. field terminal to ground, ground to armature terminal, field to armature terminal. Is this the case here for a normal generator setup?
Best advise will be most welcome.

No problem with rplacing the insulation with black electrical tape. Continuity on all the terminals to ground is ok.. (depending on the definition of continuity) The ohmic values are so low, in the order of 3 ohms or less, that the average ohm meter has prolems reading these values correctly. Check the voltage of the battery when it is charging. The voltage regulator cuts off at about 7 -7.5 volts. If most of your operating is in short runs, the generator may not be able to keep your battery charged. Happy Motoring

Have you tested the voltage across the battery terminals while the tractor is running? Voltage should be above 7 but below 8, for a 6 volt system. That would be the first place I would check for a dead battery.

Of course there are those who say that replacing the battery every couple of years is expected.

Good Luck
