Hey - thanks to all for the advice on the King Kutter line of mowers. I bit the bullet this weekwnd and purchased a 60" model at Farm and Fleet.

Question : The mower is shipped without grease in the bearings, and no oil in the gear box. The manual recomends 90 to 140 wt. gear oil. Which weight should I look at and how often does it get changed? The manual was vauge about the oil to start with and offered no service schedule.

Also Question : The mower shipped with 5 wheels and arms. It only has 4 sockets for wheels. I hessitate to ask Farm and Fleet if this is one too many for fear they will say, hey we been looking for that. Does anyone know if King Kutter shipps with a spare wheel and wheel arm assembly?

Mine only came with four wheels and arms. I could use another one though -- see the post up the page a little (my response to running up a tree).

Ed, I am going to be a little contrary to the others. First a thought, morals are what you exibit when no one else is looking. Most people will do the right thing when someone is looking over there sholder. What are you going to do while no one looking? Second, do unto others as you would have them do to you? If you bought the cutter and it had 3 wheels you would expect another. Lastly, if you offer to give the wheel back they will most likely say, keep it. Then you will have to figure out where to keep a replacement part you should never need but have a clear conchence(sp?). One final thought, carma goes a long way, you would hate for your KK to have bad juju ;-)

I will stop preaching now.

My King Kutter is the 6'. It didn't come with the extra wheel so it looks like you have a bonus. Watch out when you pump up the tires whenever you need to. There isn't much clearance around the the bolts holding the wheel on the spindle so be careful you don't bend the valve. I use 90 wt oil. Another thing to watch out for is when you grease the pullies is to make sure you don't over grease. If you do, the grease will spreadout onto your belts. Not a good thing to have to deal with.

Ed - I too bit the bullet a few weeks ago and went with the KK 72" model. I put 90w. oil in the gearbox and used it for about an hour on Saturday (first time). Gearbox was still cool to the touch. Mine did not come with an extra wheel so I think you got a BONUS on your deal.

I beat the heck out of my 5 foot KK Rotary Cutter so I grease and oil it with every use.
I have 90 weight in the gear box and after hogging for 2 hours in hot weather I can still hold my hand on the gear box...

I have 90 wt. in my King Kutter, Farm and Home serviced it before I picked it up. I wouldn't worry about using 140 because it is pretty severe service and generally when your mowing it's not freezing cold. I have to think that the extra wheel assembly has to be a oversight. I've used my mower for three seasons with mininum breakdowns. Needed one idler pulley and it was especially heavy. Called King Kutter and ordered two and an extra belt. They have a web site and were very helpful and prompt.
