I recently bought my tractor with the house I moved into. The previous owner had the motor rebuilt, but had his 'mechanic' son put the parts back together. It has only been turned over since, not actually run. His son had made all the gaskets from gasket material and I don't have a problem with this except for the head gasket. Now, I am not totally familiar with this engine or many machines of this era, but any engine I have rebuilt in the last 15 years (2-8 cyl) have all required head gaskets with firing rings. The previous owner maintains that the engine was a low compression engine and the gasket will not pose a problem. I want to be sure before I take that leap of faith as I will tear it down and replace the gaskets with proper ones if he was wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't go with the home made head gasket!!!!!

Take the head off and replace it with a factory head gasket. That is just a little too much!

I have made a lot of gaskets from materials but not a head gasket. I have used a head gasket more than once and had not probelems with them but I would never try to make a head gasket unless I were broken down on a lonely road in the jungle and only had my trusty Swiss army knife and a pair of pliers and had to have a trailer load of amunition to the troops before they were over run by the Huns.

Hi Jay; Zane is right. I would not waste my time with a homemade head gasket. A factory head gasket is cheap comparied to the time you will spend and possibably the money to correct the problems it may cause. Good Luck
