Dell, Zane Thanks for the info and advice on the trans input shaft questions. Once open I found no (NONE, ZERO, NODA) rubber lip or even rubber on the seal! The retaining spring was loose over the shaft (holding back the tranny lube no doubt!). The shaft is in very good condition. A little polishing with crocus cloth and just like new. The two bearings and cups look ok (a few pin hole sized rust spots/pits on the cups), not like new but what the $%#^ fifty years of use, I should look so good. I'm going to install a new seal and gasket, and then finally start putting my engine back together. Thanks again, Jim

you're lucky, sometimes even when you think you know what you're doing, a little pat on the back makes for a more confident learning experience. Glad you took that first big step and now its all down hill (grin)..... ...Dell

I would not put any gasket on the input shaft bearing retainer/ seal retainer/ input shaft tube.

Just clean all the oil off the mating surfaces and use some silicone glue instead of a gasket. This will do a good job of holding the oil inside and it will allow some lessening of the excess clearance of the tapered cone and cup bearings. Just be sure not to have too much preload or over tight bearing fit. I don't think you will though considering that it had lots of loose motion when you dissasembled it.
