My 8n will not run above an idle unless it is choked about 1/4. It will run ok then at a high idle but I haven't tried it under a load. The carb's been rebuilt but maybe not correctly. Head and maniflod gaskets are ok. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mike..... ...there are several causes for this problem. Most of them are sparkie based. Make certain that your firing order is 1,2,4,3,CCW, (this works wheather your 8N is a 4-nipple frontmount distributor or a 5-nipple sidemount distributor) Usually sparkies wires 3&4 are reversed.

Weak sparkies need an enriched mixture to fire. You may need new points for a stonger hotter sparkie. New AutoLite AL-437's are recommended, gapped 0.025"

Iff'n you've address yer weak sparkie issues and still are having running trouble, try enriching your down pointing MAIN JET by 1/8 turn CCW at a time for a full 1-turn enrichement. Iff'n that doesn't solve yer runnin' problems, you may have carburator issues. But start with the eazy stuff first.

I assume you do know how to adjust the M/S carburator. Adjust the sidepointing idlemixture for maximum rpms. NOT smoothest running, MAX rpms. Understand? The idlemixture is BASSAKWARDS; out for lean; IN for INRICH. My idlemixture usually ends up about 3/8 turn. Idle speed is a SLOOOoooww 400rpms..... ..... Dell

If you can get it to full speed some times you can get a little junk out by full chokeing it off and on a few times with out chokeing to engine to the point of stopping. Or as you said the rebuild wasn't done well and who ever missed some junk in the main jet

Could also be trash in the needle seat area from corrosion products that develop from moisture in the fuel. These little pieces of crud can actually plug your jets when everything alse is clean enough to run.
