Hi Guy's, I have a 2N that did not have a pump. They had made a cover to go over the opening ,and then created out of 2" angle a draw hitch like what is on the 8N.I have a pump now and was told to use FORD SPEC. hyd.oil.What I needed to know is should I recover the opening and fill with 5 gal. kerosene and not run the tractor but shake the tractor back and fourth to get rid of the accumulation of particle's from over the year's?I have herd stories of FORD's and how tough they are,but just how much can there hyd. take?Your help is GREATLY appreciated!Thank you in advance. Jay

Hi again, Thank you for the help guy's!One thing though? What do you mean by "new pto"?Do you mean anew shaft or just gaskets??And if I remove the top part and replace the ram with a new naa with rubber O ring will I have to by a new cylinder or just smooth out with emery cloth & check for pitting? Is there anything I will need to adjust afterward's if I do not mess with anything else or should I go ahead and take it all apart & worry about ajustment's when the time comes?Sorry for so many question's guy's but I'm a true tractor Novice!Thank you again for your patience & all of YOUR HELP!Your friend Jay

When you remove the home made cover where the pump mounts you will remove most of the stuff that is in there. Usually the transmission and the differential don't accumulate as much gook as the lift housing.

I am assuming that you are going to have a PTO and the top lift too go along with the pump?????

If the top lift cover is still on it may be that you will have to remove the cover and take the piston out of the ram cylinder as it is probably going to be rusted from disuse and will need to be honed and new rings installed on the piston or an NAA piston bought to replace the N one because the NAA piston carrys a rubber O ring and will seal much better than the steel ones of the N piston.

I would use 80W or 90W oil in the lift if not in extreme cold climate. If it is extreme cold then use the 134 oil.

As Zane has suggested, clean and fix all three - pump, lift, and pto. With Zanes help last winter I worked on all three at the same time. It will give you five access holes (top lift, two side inspection ports, bottom pump, and the pto on the back. With these access locations all the voids, nooks and hided corners can be hand cleaned (with some modern day chemical help) and the accumulation of years of use (and neglect) removed. Do not forget to remove the plug for the transmission at the same time. Find a "little" hand (my wife for me) to clean the bottom area here also (should not be as bad as the other areas as Zane said). Check on the tranmission's top gasket to be sure it is not leaking and replace the shifter rubber boot if bad (looking for tight against leaks, rain, washing). When you close all this up and add the fresh lube, it will be better than it has been for years, I'm SURE!

Good Luck, Jim
