This past weekend I went looking at finish mowers. Talk about sticker shock!!!

The prices from tractor dealers ranged from $1600 to $2000. The best price I found was at my local FARM and FLEET store. A 60" King Kutter is sold for $949.99 and a 72" for $50.00 more.

Question 1: Is King Kutter a good mower?
Question 2: Should I stick with the 60" or upgade to the 72" for the extra $50.00?

I am a satisfied King Kutter owner. I have both the 6' finish mower (bought used) and a 5' rotary mower (bought new). Rotary mower sides made of 'I'beam and have contained some very nasty rock strikes in my custom brush-hogging sideline. they are bent slightly, but a cheaper brand would have let the stuff thru the sides of sheetmetal. The finish mower does not have the dogbones with it. But. I improvised and it works well..nice job cutting, this year have to sharpen blades. (wife hit some stone along edge of garden) I have no problem with 6 footer, i cut mostly in 3 rd and when heavy stuff shift down to 2nd. handles all in those two gears.. I have used it on both my 2N and 8N. mostly 8N. Good luck

You're not the first person who's told me they mow in 3rd with an 8N with a 6 foot finish mower.

It's almost enough to make me buy an 8N (maybe a christmas present? Honey???).

I've a 72" King Kutter mower. It works fine -- I mow with a 2N in second.

You must be very punctual about mowing your grass and never let if get very long. I have a friend with a 6' mower on his N and complains it's underpowered in 1st. I will buy or build one this year but there's no way I'll go over 5' I have another friend with a D14 Allis, which will pull a 3 bottom plow as opposed to an N's 2, and in tall wet grass, a 6' Befco gives that Allis all it wants. Better to undersize a little to allow for bad conditions, you can always shift up and mow faster with a narrower deck. IMHO

The only time I drop to first is if the grass is about 3 inches taller than what I'm mowing it to (last year this happened twice because of wet weather).

Turf grasses typically should be mowed to about 3 inches and should be mowed often enough that you're not taking more than 1/3 of the height off.

If he's having trouble mowing with a 6 foot finish mower, either he's trying to mow very tall (or very tough) grass or there's something wrong with his N.

I bought a new 6' King Kutter finish mower last year when I first bought my 52 8N. I had to figure out how far to extend the upper link to keep the chain from rubbing the top gear case. All paperwork I got with the mower was ruined from rain while it sat outside at Farm and Fleet. King Kutter wouldn't come through with sending replacments. In my trial and errors, I ended up grinding off some of the outside case but not too bad with the chain. Looks worse than it was. Long story short, it cuts great! I paid around $1000 and they threw in a 6' blade.

Yup, the ones at farm and fleet sit in the rain and I have even seen some parts missing - mostly shield bolts.

Checking the KK website, I see that they have manuals in PDF format for download, something I havent seen for other manufacturers.

Thanks for the advice.

I have a 1994 6" King Kutter finish mower that I bought used at the beginning of last summer. It came attached to a 52 8N. It works great as it was well maintained over the years. I didn't have a manual so I downloaded one from their web site. I also wanted replacement safety stickers so I emailed them and they send them within a week. I was impressed.

I used a KK finish mower-5' behind a 9N for about five years. No particular problems. I don't think I would have wanted a 6' depending on how heavy the grass was, 5' was a good plenty. Ended up selling it as we developed our 2 acres and put on a lot of trees. Bought a lawn tractor with hydro and a 4' deck.

Two problems I found-one was the blades were attached with a left handed bolt, only place to get them was KK. I had trouble with blades loosening, but overcame that by putting in Belleville (cupped) washers. Second, was at the end of the 5 years, the deck was developing several stress cracks. Nothing major, they were easily welded. Other than that it was a good mower. Certainly worth the money.

IMHO

I have a King Cutter bushhog, not a finish mower. I've used it for about 5 years and it's held up well, even considering all the rocks it's met up with. As discussed here before, the paint job was not very long lasting, but mechanically it's been fine. If the finish mower is of similar quality, and you don't intend to use it every day, you should be OK. I have a Befco finish mower that I bought used for $380. It was expensive when new and has lasted a long time, and parts are available. What's the best deal for you will depend on how you use it. I like the 60" for the N, but if running good, the N should handle the 72" for true finish work. I would make that decision based on how much acreage you mow and its condition, not on the $50 difference, which isn't enough to matter.

I wrote this a long time ago, Hope this helps. My 6 footer works great on my 2N:

I did a little math after observing my neighbor pulling a 5 foot finish mower with his 8N, and me pulling a 6 footer with my 2N over last summer.

They are both King Kutter units in good condition. So are both tractors, having both recently been rebuilt. I can pull my 6 footer in 2nd gear fairly easily. At 1750 RPM, this woult be 4.69 miles per hour (5280 * 4.69 * 6 ft) or 148579.2 square feet per hour.

His 8N pulls his 5 footer just about right in 3rd gear. At the same RPM, he's at 5.79 MPH. (5280 * 5.79 * 5ft) or 152856 square feet per hour. Translated, he's doing about 3% more work than me per hour, which is probably about how much horsepower he has than me.

So if you are wondering how wide a finish mower to get for your 8N or 2N/9N, The facts would suggest the 5 footer for a 8N, and a 6 footer for the 2N.

Of course your milage/opinion may vary, but a few facts can't hurt!

King Kutter is cheaper than a lot of mowers, but what I have seen doesn't look too bad. I suggest you take a good look at all of the mowers you can find, including spec sheets, and make up your own mind about whether the extra money is worth it.

I bought a Bush Hog RDTH-72 because I decided it would do what I need for many years, and I'm happy with the choice I made. YMMV.
