Working this afternoon a bit on Project Rustbucket. The dash is in and all gauges are mounted. The old starter switch is not working, so I will replace that, no biggie. Here is what is original on the electrical - generator, coil, solenoid (still has the FoMoCo stamp on the top) and starter has been rebuilt by a shop. Here is what is new - ammeter gauge, oil pressure gauge, voltage regulator, wiring harness, teminal block, thick as your thumb battery cables, 6v battery. The engine turns over quickly on the 6 volt battery now (except I have to ground the starter button wire to get it to start spinning). It starts up quick, but now has developed a new "popping" through the exhaust since I put the exhaust pipe on - it is not a timing issue. But, my bigger problem is my ammeter. When I turn on the key it registers slightly towards the "+" side, and when I start it it bounces wildly from 0 to -30. I shorted between the "BAT" and the "FLD" on the voltage regualator to polorize my "B" circuit generator before I started it, and I verified I have a "B" circuit regulator. A measurement at the battery before I started it up was 6.35V (new battery, never used yet) and when running it registered 7.45V after a couple minutes, and 7.93V after 5 minutes or so. Is almost 8 volts normal? Can anyone help me with the ammeter readings?

TIA,
Dan

I'd replace the coil. New modern oil filled coils do better than those old jobs. I replaced the coil on my NAA and was surprised to get even better spark than I had ( it ran good anyway ).. from a cheapy napa ic14sb coil.

Dan..... ....gotta repeat what I just told the Giant Man:

"Shorty..... ...depends..... ..OEM 8N ammeter was a "loop" style where you threaded the battery charge wire thru it likka needle. Iff'n meter indicated incorrectly, you just re-threaded the insulated wire the other direction. The is NO DIRECT connection with the "loop" style ammeter.

Replacement ammeters are 2-terminal feed-thru style where you haffta cut the battery charge wire and connect ends to the ammeter terminals. Again iff'n ammeter indicates incorrectly, just swapp the wire ends..... ....Dell

Dell - I just read that and went out and swapped it around. The ammeter now pulls towards the "-" side when I turn the key on and the points are closed. Can you comment on the bouncing ammeter needle once it is started? Also, is amost 8V too much on a charge for a 6V battery?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan..... ....usually something electrical that is making intermittant contact causes the ammeter to bounce. My first guess would be brushes in the generator. $3, cheap. 2nd guess, sticky voltage regulator contacts. $30, (not so cheap) but there isn't a good shadetree mechanics test for voltage regulators except charge voltage output.

Is 7.93 too much after 5 mins? Well yeah, kinda 'specially since yer battery charge after starting is just 7.45. Charge should taper-off after start-up. This is a function of the voltage regulator. But on the otherhand, your battery may just be low water.

Voltage regulators are NOT KNOWN FOR ROBUSTNESS, thats why you can't return'em. Hamm-handed shadetree mechanics cause many V/R early demise..... ..Dell

Dell, I checked the water in the battery before I started. I took the generator apart to put a new kit in it a few months ago, but it looked like a new kit was just put in not many run-hours before. I still have the kit and may go ahead and install new brushes anyway...

On my 8N VRs, I shorted between the ARM and the BAT terminals, I read in the archives last night on the B Circuit VRs like the NAAs have, you short between the FLD and the BAT terminals.

Can you confirm this is correct and that I didn't just ruin my new VR?

Thanks,
Dan

Another possibility is that your VOM doesn't like the brush noise.

Check the battery voltage after startup, and some run time, and then shut the tractor off. If the battery is way high.. like 7.9.. then that's too high... if it is 6.5 to 7.. that's not bad.

one thing. Ensure the VR and the GENNY have good ground reference. Bad ground reference on a vr can cause overcharging.

Also.. as long as the charge stays positive.. even if it jumps a little.. it might be worth it to just leave it alone.. unless you want to replace the vr.. etc.

Dan..... ....YES, to polarize "B" circuit voltage regulators as used on the NAA, is arc-spark the FIELD & BATT together.

Sometimes you can take the voltage regulator squarecan cover off for a look-see, sometime you can't 'cuz theys riveted on. But even iff'n you lookie-look and see sumptin you think is wrong, whatcha gonnna doo? Replace it ennyways..... ...Dell
