I bought a 46 2N last year. (Verified to be a 2N by helpful members on this site) I love the thing. The tractor tin is painted light gray with the drive train, engine, 3pt, seat, etc painted red. Now I understand that the 9N's and 2N's were painted all gray. Yet, I see lots and lots of used 2N's and 9N's (like mine) for sale painted red/graylike the 8N. Anybody have any idea why so many are like this? Why would somebody go to so much trouble to paint them like the 8N????? Just a dumb question. Anybody know why?

Don't really matter what color they are as long as they are healthy. Mine is gray, rust, engine is black cause thats what color I had on hand when I got her rebuilt, diff. housing is blue cause thats what color the tractor was that it came off of. Some day I'm gonna get her cleaned up & shoot it all gray. Was gonna do that this summer but with the farmin & buying this house The money wasn't there. The lack of paint didn't stop the old girl from keeping the snow off the " driveway from hell". Well enjoy your N what ever color it may be. It's still a part of our past. The season is upon us to start the field work & some day 50 years down the road some one is gonna try to get parts for those tractors & wont be able to.
I will spend 12-15 hrs aday in the big JD's & still have to fire up my little 2N 0n sunday for a couple hours just to gat right with this silly world we live in. I love farmin'

When I was a kid, 50 years ago, many of the 2Ns and 9Ns in Boone County, Missouri were painted red and gray even then. Two reasons: One is when George Russell Ford Tractor and Implement took a 9 or 2 in on trade for an 8N, he would often paint it with 8N colors to make it more Ford than Ferguson to keep the farmers from wanting to trade at Vandiver's Ferguson dealership. 2nd reason is Russell ran a special once or twice offering to paint any all-gray Ford-Ferguson into a red and gray for only $25.00. Even 50 years ago most of us thought the red and grays were better looking. Russell and Vandiver are dead and their dealerships are long gone. I suspect there were similar situations all over America. As a side note, I first plowed with an 8N in the late 1940s when I was about 9 years old on our first farm at Pocahontas, Iowa. The dealership buildings in Pocahontas and Columbia were twins, exactly the same size metal quonsets and both are still standing. I was just reading in the Farmall Originality Guide about an official factory program IH had to repaint tractors in the off-season to keep the dealerships' cash-flow going. Problem is that they tended to be less careful about decals and accesories when repainting. Ford may have had a similar plan, but I'm sure whether they did or not, that the dealerships were after the same thing: mo' money.

I understand that there is a Ford Company memo which urged dealers who took in 9N and 2N tractors for trade to repaint them 8N colors.

In all honesty, most people, myself included, think that the 8N color scheme is more apealing than the more bland 9/2N all grey scheme.

Truly it is an "eye of the beholder" issue. If you like it all grey, great; red and grey is a-ok.

Keep in mind also that there is a large portion of the general population that call all N-series tractors "9N" and recognize them as "red-bellies."

Ed-
You and "twofordsmike" give a good explanation. I think a lot of it was personal preference but I've read and heard about that Ford memo too. Ford wanted them to look more like 8Ns and less like Fergusons because of the 3 pt. litigation issue.
My 46 2N was painted like an 8N when I got it. I kept it this way for about a year and then we went through it and did some things that needed doing, we cleaned it up and painted it all gray.

Most people don't know a 9n from an 8n. And some aren't even painted red and grey. Case in point: I've got mine painted with light grey on the sheetmetal, flat black on all engine and drivetrain components, chrome dash, chrome carb air intake tube and air cleaner stack, and chrome light bezels, and red "Ford" script on the hood. Wheels are silver with flat black hubs. I'm not a restorer, but most of the people that visit my house don't know what color it's supposed to be, only that the 2N gets lots of compliments.
