Can a 6v generator be tested with a multi-meter while installed on the tractor (1946 2N) or should it be taken to a starter shop for testing? This is a follow-up to my question yesterday. I was going to try it this morning, by putting neg. tester lead on generator post and pos. lead on motor, but I thought I would ask first. The reason for the test is to see if the cut-out relay is working. To recap, while running 1/2 throttle, voltage across the battery terminals reads 5.8 to 5.9 volts. I understand, from Claus, that the voltage should be above 7. If it is possible to test the voltage on the generator, what should it be reading? As additional info, the previous non-ford generator (which was changed to a rebuilt ford 9mo. ago along with a new cut-out relay) always charged at 20+ amps, so I don't suspect a short of any kind. Since changing the generator (the old one seized up) the amp meter has hovered around 0 amps. Thanks for the help in advance!
