I noticed yesterday that my left rear axle is leaking from behind the axle nut and not a drop in the break drum. But when i jacked it up i notice that my hub moves a little on the axle.(forword and backword not in and out).Would a new hub fix this or would it be my axle is worn? Thanks in advance Dave....

Dave,
If yer axle nut is torqued to 450 foot pounds and you still have the movement, it"s probably the hub. Hub is softer metal than the axle, but ya won"t know for sure til ya look. If the hub comes off the axle without a fight, it"s a good indication there"s wear. Once apart, ya can take a look at the bearing. Hopefully, it"s OK. Easy job til ya drop something on yer toe. (grin)

dave8n,
Once you've leak enough tranny fluid on you brake shoes you will find that stopping is more of a forced landing (complete with much shouting and mashing of teeth). When you get to replacing the seals there is another alternative to the original seals, its a seal with a cone shaped housing that you can press on with a steel post pounder thingy.

If you get to that point (and you didn't know any more about the little Ford tractors than I did when I replaced mine), drop me a line and I'll go into Meridian Tractor and ask Dave for the part number (then send it to you). That is where I got mine but I bet Yesterday's Tractors has them too.

Is that seal you mentioned for a 8N or 9N? Is it a Sure-Seal?

Dave..... ....while the reason your hub/nut is worn and that would also mean yer axle seals are due to be replaced at the same time, yer seals are still holding and that is the reason you haven't yet greesed yer brakes. ...BUT...

Check yer hydro-tranny oil for OVERFILL, this is the MOST COMMON CAUSE of oil leaking out the rear axle trumpet mouths. The correct level is best set by pulling the bottom bolt from the 6" dipp-stick plate and lett all the oil drain out and down the side of your tractor. Next morning, mark the correct oil-level on your dipp-stick..... ...Dell

Yep,Thanks Dell i had the lift cover removed last summer and cleaned her out real good and rebuilt lift cylinder.I put in 5 gallons with inspection plate off and did'nt even run out bottom bolt hole so i figured that was enough and it has'nt lost enough to add any.I'm just worried about the hub moveing on the axle.Have'nt learned much about the axles yet. Thanks again Dave..
