I've been working on my 8N and builing access roads in my bush. Now I'm coming up to the time where I will start to selectively harvest timber off my land. I looking for informantion on any logging implements that other owners may know of.

I have used a Farmi winch (not sure which model). My neighbor looked on with amazement as we skidded 16 inch Maple trees from his clearing project. My '39 had no problem running the winch at idle. Using one of these is a joy and much easier on the N than dragging with a chain.

Personally, the only piece of 'equipment' that I use while snaking logs with my 8N is a 'cinch'.
Take about 6-7 feet of 1/4" cable and put a 6 inch loop on one end and a 3 inch hook on the other. Back up to the log, put the hook through the loop, and put the cable around the end of the log about a foot in. I then put the hook on my stationary bar (home made) that I have attached under the PTO where the usual aftermarket bars attach. Then simply lift the front of the log with whatever is on the 3-point. Sometimes I have my 11 hole 'drawbar' on there and sometimes it is my snow blade. You only need to get the front of the log up a couple of inches to be able to snake some pretty impressive logs.
I also have the link below about logging with farm tractors.

Here is a picture of my EAGER BEAVER THANG that I invented and used to log about 100 acres of timber some years ago.

It works great by adding the weitht of the log to the rear wheels adding much more traction.

If and when I get my band saw sawmill completed that I am in the process of fabricating I am going to use it again to haul up some logs to make into lumber.

I was at a forestry show today. The rep from "NORSE" skidding winches said that a model #290 would work ok on an 8N. An older model, #190 was a bit smaller. I saw one used on an TO-20. Remember SAFETY is #1

I am in the same situation - looking to use my *n for selective logging. Does anyone know if an 8N can operate a logging winch or does it require abigger machine?

Howard..... .thank you for asking

One of the most important things to realize is: NEVER PULL anything from that handy-dandy 3-point toplink under your N-Seat. Guaranteed to pull your tractor over on top of you and the members of the N-Board will be offering condolences to your survivors. DON'T DO IT! ! !

I have seen 2 different "logging arches" for pulling logs out with your tractor posted on the internet. I don't have addresses right now, you might want to do a search. I think that they are a great idea..... ..Dell, the self-appointed safetly preacher

I use a set of log tongs and 1-2 log chains.

I also use what I call a log boat, made out of heavy steel and looks a bit like the front of a boat or canoe. It has 2 holes through the top for a chain to go through and attach to the log. This boat lets the log move easier and cuts down on it diging into the earth.

Also have a cant hook on hand and a come-a-long for getting the log off a hang up on a stump, tree, or rock.

I always pull from the draw bar.

Works good.

Also have a frame from an old back blade...no blade for it, but the part where the swivel was lets me drop a chain through and hook up a log beneath, then I raise the 3 point and the front of the log lifts with it, works great and gives me good control and saves on tearing up the ground...much more steady and safe than a boom pole since it is so much lower.

Have fun and be safe.
