A few times I've seen the mention of the "2NAN" and the "9NAN" Not much in the archives. Someone said "ANs" were made for export. Someone else said only 9NANs had the reserve fuel system.(That dont sound right)

Is the "AN" a distinct subspecies ? If so what sets it apart ? Are there casting codes/dates that would ID a N as an "AN" ?

Hi there,

We live in the Netherlands and collect Fords.
We have a 1948 8NAN which runs on kerosene.
It is fitted with an different kind of cylinderhead( lower compression) and an Holley vaporiser similar to the ones used on the 1926/27
Fordsons. Our opinion is that the 8 NAN is the best tractor to run on kerosene.

Thank you.

There were kero burner models for all the N's, 9N/2N/8N. The reprint Parts Book, 1939 - 1952, has a page showing the kerosene vaporizor. All NAN's had to have a temperature gage so the operator wuold know when he could switch from gas to kero. Plamer Fossum has a 8NAN.

When I can get into Photopoint, I'll post a link to a picture of the temperature gage on his 8NAN.

I believe they run on kerosene.

Someone out there will confirm that, I am sure.

Go over to England and you will find many NAN series 9/2/8N's. the cost of petrol there is so high, that kerosene or 'tvo' (tractor vaporizing oil) is still in extensive use there...If you want to buy a NAN equipped tractor, the is the best place to get it..
our fuel prices are cheap compared to what they have to pay..not me,,I'll buy fuel over here.
Keep on N-ing

I saw a picture of a NAN carb once and it looked as big as a lunchbox. Aparently to get the kerosene to burn it had to be warm, which they accomplished by increasing the area exposed to the exhaust manifold via this large carburetor. The tractors still started on gas but then switched over to kerosene once the tractor was warm. These were popular in england where the cost of ker. was about 1/2 of petrol.
