BAD WATER PUMP?

It was about forty degrees this morning and I used by 9N for about three hours to bush-hog my field. The entire time it seemed like it was on the verge of overheating. I have a small hose attached to the fitting on the neck of the radiator and vapor/steam was coming out of the hose intermittently for the entire time. I don't have a thermostat installed and the radiator is new. How do I know if my water pump is going bad? Is there some way to check it? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hey Bob, usually the water pump will show signs of wear by leaking fron its weep hole at the bottom of the shaft, behind the pulley. Check there for leaks and/or stains indicating leaks. You can also check your water pump easily since you don't have a thermostat by cranking it cold and peering in the radiator to see if the coolant is kicking around. It should really be moving if the water pump is doing its job. Don't open your radiator hot, can cause nasty burns from an eruption of scalding water. If the thermostat is already in, remove the radiator cap cold, then crank and warm up the tractor, then after the thermostat opens, peek inside the radiator and see if the coolant is flowing. You can even change the idle settings and see the flow change if the water pump is up to snuff. Your symptoms could be just the tractor seeing its breath in the cold air, but it shouldn't be venting steam, so check your radiator cap while you're at it for a good gasket and spring.

What they said....and also check your belt tightness. I had a similar problem last summer and found the belt was loose and slipping on the pump preventing the fan from turning properly. I ended up putting a new belt on. I have had no problems since.

Bob..... ....its 40*, what do you expect to see from your radiator overflow tube? Ice-Cubes? You just ain't used to the cold and its effects on water vapor. Definately, install a top radiator hose mounted thermostat. Your tractor engne will thank you. When a waterpump goes bad, IT LEAKS and SQUEEKS. Your new radiator would almost have to be fully clogged to cause you engine to overheat. You could have a loose radiator cap. But my bett, its just NORMAL..... ....Dell

First off, you need a thermostat. Without it, the engine heats unevenly, and consequently wears unevenly. Most N overheating is caused by overfilling the radiator; add just enough water to cover the core. Next, it's not unusual to stir up a mess of debris when bushogging, which gets stuck in the radiator fins. Most water pumps will make noise, leak, or both as they go bad. Grab the fan and shake it; you should have no play at all in the shaft. And, remove the radiator cap; if the water is moving, chances are the pump is working.
