8N Turns over, but won't start

Ok here goes. I picked up an 8N from a good friend that wouldn't start. He said that it was running fine until his son was hot roding it around one day. His son came in the house with his tail between his legs. When they started the tractor back up it ran really rough for a few minutes then died. This was about 6 months ago.

When I got it home I removed the carb, cleaned it and charged the battery. The engine turns over, the carb gets fuel, but will not start. I figured that it was just needing a tune up, but my friend claims that they just had one done about a year ago. Any idea's? It's probably a simple problem, but I don't know where to start.

If it's been setting for a year, the points are probably corroded. The entire kit.....points, plugs, condenser & rotor is $17 from NH. Gap the side-mount points at .025 on all 4 lobes; .015 for the front-mount.

I have had my points slip after working tractor hard. Check your spark if weak or none check points.

Don't mean to sound stupid, but how do you check for spark? I'm pretty mechanicaly enclined, but not knowlageable on engines. All I can picture in my head is a scene out of the road runner only i'm wiley coyote holding an acme spark plug.

Thanks in advance!

Pull the coil wire outta the distributor and stick a Phillips screwdriver in the end of it. Now you can lay the screwdriver down so that the metal shaft is close to a metal part of the tractor and crank over the engine. You should be able to see a nice blue spark jump the gap, indicating fire from the coil and good points and distributor (except for the distrubutor cap). You can also have your wife hold the screwdriver shaft while you crank the engine over and watch for her to dance. This works just as good, and is much more fun, but you can only do it once!

If this works, you can go on to Dell"s sparkie test to verify the distributor cap and plugs.

Cliff..... .....Make yourself a "calibrated" sparkie tester from enny ol'sparkie by bending the side electrode out for a real 3/16" gap. Now clamp the metal shell to any convient engine part and plug enny sparkie wire ontop of tester.

Crank yer engine and watch the tester for sparkies.

Its ok iff'n it starts, not necessary but yer N-Engine is so good it will start and run on just 2 cylinders.

Now does your ignition have enuff gutts to jump that tester gap with blue-snott authority? NO? try another sparkie wire. Go thru all 4 sparkie wires. Iff'n they all jump with blue sparkies, your ignition system is probably ok. Iff'n one sparkie is reddish-yellow, then most likely you've gotta bad sparkie wire. Iff'n all are reddish-yellow, most likely you've gott bad ignition points. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell, self-appointed sparkie-meister
