I have a question on engine bell-housings.

As many of you know.. I'm possibly going to try to re-power an old miller welder that had a perkins engine in it.. with another newer engine. the older perkins died, and the rebuild kit is way too much to even consider.. however.. engines in the correct hp range are available in the surplus center catalog for about 1/3rd of the rebuild kit for the previous engine. I have the specs for the new engines bell housing I'm looking at ( sae 5 ).. but how do I tell what the bell housing specs are for the old engine? is there a standard measureing jig, etc?

you've probably already been here but here is the Perkins web-site.

And also the Link to the product spec sheet for the one listed in the surplus center

Well I managed to squeeze that it was a sae5 b/h out of them for the new 3 cyl one I was looking at.... now all I need to do is try to find the info on the older unit.

Our mechanic is out measuring the old bell housing now. Those sae bellhousing specs are nice to have.
