I drained the hydraulic oil out of my 2N today and noticed it had a lot of sludge in it. I have though about pouring about 5 gallons of kerosene in it and let it set for a couple of days, then jack up the rear of the tractor, and with it in gear, turn the wheels for a while to get the kerosene through everything except the pump. Does this make sense or does anyone have a better idea? Thanks for your replies.

DPH..... ...Better idea. Gitta cheap 1-gallon gardern pressure sprayer just pressure wash all yer sludge thru yer 6" round dipstick plate access port using mineral spirits paint thinner, kerosine is good, so is dieselfuel, or ATF. (whatever is cheapest) Just letter drain out the 3" hydraulic pump drain plug.

Almost ALL the sludge settles in the bottom of hydraulic chamber but NOT in the pump. Very little settles in the tranny or differential chambers because of the constant movement of the gears, swirling the oil around, doesn't allow the sludge to settle out.

Don't bother trying to soak the sludge off or moving the solvent fluid around by the rear wheels, the sludge has very little solubility to solvents..... ...Dell

Turning the gears would deffinately work at getting the grit circulated all in the differential. I wouldn't do it.

If you really have lots of sludge.. the best bet is to drop the hydro pump, pull the pto shaft, and also pull the right side cover. This will require you to get 1.85$ worth of gaskets, and a razor blade to clean the gasket surfacesa.. but then you can use a sprayer and kerosene the heck out of the rear end and the hyd sump. If you were carefull, you could probably even pull the tranny top cover and spend another few cents on a gasket ( watch the detent spring and ball under the cover ), and then spray out the tranny thru it's bottom 2" bung as well.

Get a paint strainer and reuse the kerosene and just keep pouring it on and scraping with a putty knife.

This job will be about a 3-4 hour job, and will be a tad easier if you have a kid or wife to help you hold a part or pump a jack handle.. etc.. but if you can't find help.. no problem.. if you are able to get around and can lift about 65# you can do it yourself.

Pulling the top cover of the trans on a 2N takes a lot more work because its part of the steering gear.

Yep.. I didn't even see the 2n part... deffinately wouldn't do that unless there was massize sludge buildup...
