HELLO ALL! WHEN I TRY TO TAKE OFF IN THIRD GEAR (ON A LEVEL WITH NOTHING IN TOW), I MUST HAVE THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN AND SLOWLY LET THE CLUTCH OUT JUST TO GET GOING WITHOUT STALLING. ALL OTHER GEARS WORK JUST FINE.

IS THIS NORMAL?

Thats a typical problem if the governor does not work.

Watch to see if the governor shaft moves the carburator throttle when you load the engine down ..... .Dell

I have the same prob with my 47 2N. It's like there should be a gear called 2.5 or that 3rd is really 4th.

I suspect its related to governor problems as I've replaced/retuned the electrical and rebuilt the carb.

Eric, Do you have a step-up transmission (extra shifter on left side) if so thats what 3rd will do when the step-up is in high. Hope this helps. Dave.

I DO HAVE ANOTHER SHIFTER ON THE LEFT. IT IS BELOW THE SEAT AND DOWN NEAR THE AXEL. IT MOVES EITHER UP OR DOWN AND APPARENTLY CONTROLS THE PTO AND HYDRALICS. ARE YOU REFERING TO THIS?

Eric..... .White was refering to the common "Sherman" aux tranny shifter lever that comes out the left side up under the battery/steering gearbox area of the clutch housing.

And yes, your PTO shifter under the leftside of your seat also controls the hydraulic pump..... .Dell

One of the things I remember as a kid about my Grandfather's 2N was how powerful it seemed at all throttle levels in third gear. My 46 2N is real "torquey" in 3rd at all throttle settiings but the carb was rebuilt a couple of years ago along with a complete electrical tune-up. Could be carb, timing, points, plugs. Check the simple stuff first.

Well, all I can tell you is my 2n doesn't do that. It will pull itself off the dime in 3rd right off of idle. Has this just started? Or has it been slowly going down hill as far as power is concerned. If your governor is working ok (frankly, this shouldn't make a difference here since you are manually opening the throttle), and it isn't missing or anything, and a brake isn't dragging, I would first suspicion a bad load of gas, because you're down on power. If that's not it, then I would start taking compression checks. My $.02

I purchased the tractor in November 2000. It sat idle in my garage for 3 months (it got dusty since a dry wall crew did not pull it out when they sanded walls) so i don't really know if it had this problem or if it is getting worse. When I am traveling in 3rd say at half throttle, and approach a gradual incline, the motor starts to work hard and wants to die. your thoughts...
