Just a story for ya here. The other day I stopped down at the local New Holland dealer. You see I had this problem with my 8N and I thought it was a coil problem. I walked over to the parts counter and "hung out" untill the guy behind the counter called on me (there was nobody else even there). Anyway, I humbly asked if he had a coil in stock for my tractor and if it was 6V or 12V. Well I don't know what set this guy off but he stood up and just about ripped me a new one. He literally yelled "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 12 VOLT COIL !!!!" Man, was he pissed. I don't even remember what happened after that. I know I left feeling really dumb.

I came home a rechecked the archives here just to make sure I understood things correctly. PS the problem turned out not to be the coil (please don't ask).

Let me stick my neck out and put my two cents in on this. The rule I generally follow is to let someone mess up three times before I pass judgement on them. (give or take, I was not a witness to the incident). So please don't judge the man or the dealership just yet, as one doesn't know what stress or deal the man was in. As they say the indian said; Don't criticize your neighbor untill you have walked a mile in his moccasins. (or something like that) Just a neutral observation. Mike.

Sorry you were treated like that. If one of my partsmen would have sounded off like that he would have been out the door. One thing that we took pride in was service for the old units. It wasn't always a money thing, just sort of customer service. We sold parts to the grandchildren of our original customers.

Ford Tractor Operations (FTO) made a policy decision to the effect that now any farmer could afford to drive 75 miles to a dealership, and as a result they did not want dealerships any closer that 100 miles. This was the primary factor for my decision to close our dealership that was started by my family over 40 years earlier.

If the question is who is dumb no contest. Anybody in a service business who abuses customers is in need of an attitude adjustment.

Some day when you have an hour to kill you can help adjust that attitude. Go into the new sales area and kick the tires on a new Boomer. Ask a few questions so the salesman starts to smell the beer on that 20K sale. Then ask how parts availability is. When you get the usual answer walk the salesman back to the parts department, point out the jerk who gave you blast, and tell the salesman that dude cost you this sale.

Your mileage may vary

It is for exactly reasons like that that I don't deal with CNH. I get all my parts from people who make it their business to know about my tractor. Also why I hate going to Advance or Auto zone. I primarily get my car parts from Napa unless it's something fool proof like an alternator. The guys at Advance said "There's no such thing as a left-handed drill bit"...then I asked him what that small pack of drill bits was hanging on the wall. He looked kinda surprised and said "Wow, left-handed drill bits". All he had ever known was Easy-outs. Combine that with the fact that CNH will sell you a bolt for $121 when you can buy it else where for $48 and I just steer clear altogether.

Why even consider going back there? There are lots of folks that you can deal with other than the jerk at the NH dealership. I for one have had good success by frequenting those who are mentioned on this board and at no time did anyone treat me like a child.

Think about who's in control here.... you are.

I was a parts manager in a dealership in Talladega Alabama from late 1959 through about 1967. At the time I was selling parts there was nothing but six volt coils for the 9N/2N/8N Ford tractors. I think the first 12 volt systems came in the 801 series as far as gasoline engined tractors.

That parts man is typical of parts men at most tractor dealerships now days. They are the lowest paid people in the store and you know that old saying."You get what you pay for"

You would not believe some of the statements I have gotten from the local IH dealership parts men. Even though they have been there for years non of them know anything about anythinng.

I guess I'm going to show my ignorance but I don't think NH offers a 6V front mount coil.

Well, I really did show my ignorance. I meant to say I don't think NH offers a 12V front mount coil. Still there's nothing worse than giving money to somebody who treats you rude. There are plenty of places to buy 8N parts.

Like others, I would stay away. I might even call the manager, or owner and let him know why I planned on staying away. The guy needs a lesson on "customer service".

If the NH dealer is like those near me, everyone from the manager on down caters to the set with the new $30,000 to $200,000 machinery, and the mere mention of an old "N" brings scowls.

A couple of years ago, I did a bunch of work on a Ford Major, and several "N"'s at the same time, and took a list (complete with part numbers) to my nearest NH dealer. I had to leave the list for the parts manager, as the flunky at the counter said he did not know how to look the part numbers up in the system for the old stuff.

I called the parts manager the next day, and was told in a smart a$$ed manner almost all the parts on my list were no longer available.

I called a NH dealer 200 miles away, and found out most of the parts WERE still available. They ordered in the ones they didn't have, and sent them to me a few days later OPEN ACCOUNT. Most of the parts were in new-looking Ford New Holland boxes, with the part numbers I had given still used.

So it DOES MATTER what dealer you try to work with!

I agree, here in Dallas we have 4 dealers within relative driving distance. The closest one to me always says it is no longer available while I know he did not take thew time to look it up. Almost like us N owners are a complete waste of their time. Another dealer a few miles further always takes the time to look up every item, even though I don't provide part numbers. They look through on-line schematics and determine the parts and get the part numbers to reference it to. They try hard to locate the parts and get it shipped to the store within a few days. Great customer service on the few times I had to return anything. NH is quite a bit of a premium on their stuff, but some parts can only be had by them. Needless to say, I now ALWAYS use the dealer a little further and thank them every time for the additional effort it took to help out this "hobby" farmer.

Good luck,
Dan

I would print a copy of a 12v 8N coil ad, go back to the NH dealer, find the manager, tell him of your previous question & the response of the parts clerk, and place the ad in his hand. And, if you have another local source for parts, you can then explain why you will be taking your business elsewhere.

About 4 years ago when I was refurbishing my 8N, I call the local NH dealer to enquire about thier prices on engine rebuild kits. I specifically asked about sleeves and pistons sets. The guy I talked with told me that the 8N didn't have sleeves. I said thanks anyway and hung up the phone.

I figured he's young and inexperienced. Hopefully he will learn.

THERE ARE 12V COILS. I HAVE ONE-NO RESISTOR REQUIRED FOR A SIDE MOUNT DIST. NH MAY NOT CARRY THEM, BUT THE GUY SHOULD NOT MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT. I WOULDNT GO BACK THERE. GOOD LUCK

So, does New Holland offer a 12 Volt coil, or only a 6 Volt coil plus a resistor?

(Are you working with a front-mount, or a side-mount distributor?)

I know there are aftermarket 12 Volt coils for the front mount, but I'm not sure if CNH offers one.

Well.. so far.. as we've seen.. there are 12v side mount coils.. for instance.. the NAPA IC14SB

There are also pseudo 12v front mount coils.. though as we have found.. they still need a small dropping resistor. ( maybee that is what he was bugging out about? ).

And then there are the coils that most of the tractor dealers sell... a 6v sidemount that says 12v w/ resistor.. etc.

My local NH dealer is an otherwise great place. EXCEPT for N related stuff. Their stock answer on an N-question is 'NLA'... even when I'm using a NH part number that has been updated/crossed and posted here by others getting parts from thier dealers.
