I can move the PTO shaft in and out of my 1947 2n about 1/4". Is this normal? If not what can I do to fix it? How much end play is acceptable?

John,
I'm no expert. From what I've read here, I'd guess the snap ring holding the bearing broke/fell off/never was reinstalled at some time. If you have a handy ditch to park the front end in, you can pull the PTO without draining the trans/hydro fluid. Removal is just the bolts around the spline shaft and pull straight out. Check both the snap ring and condition of bearing. Let us know here what you find.

I pulled the P.T.O. shaft and the rear sleve slid 1/4" towards the rear of the tractor. I cut the old sleve with a die grinder and cracked it with a chizel. I bought a new seal, gasket, and sleve for under $13. I heated the sleve in the oven and pressed it on with a hydraulic press. I put everything together last night and it seams to be working ok.

The guy at the Ford dealership said someone probably used a mower with too long of a PTO shaft. When they lowered the lift arms the mower's PTO shaft probably pushed the tractor's PTO shaft forward.

Thank you for your help,
John
