just about ready to slit my wrist. ha. she wont start and she's not firing at the sparkies. my 8n has been changed over to a 12 voly system. it has a front mount distributor. i have another 8n tractor and i took the distibutor, cap, and coil from it and installed on the 8n that wont fire. still no sparks. she turns over good. i replaced the solenoid. also i noticed that even though the key switch isoff she still turns over. what tests can i perform in order to sniff out the problem. i have a digital volt meter that i just barely know how to use. also if i leave the ground cable on over night the battery is down in the morning.please help before i get the razor blades out.

took the alternator to o'reilleys and it checked out good. going to go on my hunch that maybe it may be the ignition key switch. i'll cut wires and twist together and try startin. what do you think

Yes. A shorted alternator can kill your whole electrical system. Let us know how you stand after you verify good or replace the alternator.

Lets get a little more info. You said that it has been converted to 12V. If so, it probably has an alternator. Please confirm. If it has an alterator, it is most likely the type with an internal voltage regulator. Please confirm. If it has an alternator, forget about polarizing anything. Also if it has an alternator with internal voltage regulator, it is most likely an internal short in the alternator that is draining the battery. Now, a charging system malfunction does not "usually" cause an ignition system problem; however a shorted alternator can kill the ignition system. As Dell stated, begin by checking the voltage at the top of the coil. Post more info and we should be able to pin down the problem.

Hank..... ....you are smart to realize that by disconnecting your battery ground you stop your battery from discharging. The most likely cause is the internal cut-out relay of your voltmeter. Howsomevers, you just may need to "re-polarize" your V/R by "arc-sparking" yer V/R side-by-side BATT and ARM terminals together with a screwdriver blade or test wire. ENGINE OFF and you should draw a snapper of a sparker. Iff'n repolarization doesn't "cure" yer battery dischargeing you'll probably need to replace your voltage regulator.

Convince me that you have volts to your frontmount squarecan ignition coil terminal. You've got a meter, use it. 1 meter wire on the coil terminal, 1 meter wire rubbing the rusty engine block ennywharrs. With the ignition switch ON, you should read eather 12 volts battery (that means yer points are open) or you should read about 3 volts. (that means yer points are closed and you have a complete circuit)..... ....respectfully, Dell the sparkie-meister

Hank..... ...DISREGUARD what I said about your voltage regulator 'cuz I was thinkin' about the OEM 6 volt genny/voltage regulator. Yer 12 volt conversion probably uses the common and popular in-expensive Delco 10-SI alternator with built-in voltage regulator. Take yer suspect alternator into a carparts place for a "free" test 'cuz its probably smoked its solidstate gutts. Iff'n it tests good, gitt back to us 'cuz theres other stuff to check for discharging batterys. Meantime, keep un-grounding yer battery to keep from discharging it..... .....Dell, the electrically challenged..... duh!!!
