I have an 8n I use arround the farm, and it is incredible. It is a great tractor, and I plan to use it for many years. I am getting ready to purchace a 2nd tractor, when I noticed a cheap 1950 farmall super A. I don't really like the way the engine hangs to the left, but it looks like a neat tractor, none the less. Can I expect that It will match what my N can do, or is it a can of worms that I shouldn't get near? Are parts as available as the N's are? Any reply's are greatly appreciated.
Dave

Pretty much the same tractors, even in HP. Both GOOD tractors. However, if implements are involved, advantage goes to the 8N because of 3 pt hitch and greater availability of 3pt. implements.

I'm in the middle of restoring a BN, which is a narrow front end version of an A. Parts can be found, but they are way more expensive. As others have said, harder to get on or off of. No safety interlock on the starter.....be careful you don't run over yourself. Mine doesn't have hydraulics, so it doesn't really compare to a Super A, but lack of a three point kills most practical uses for a super A unless you convert. I got my BN cheap, and am going to use it to haul firewood with a wagon.

The guys on the Farmall board are very helpful, but not as talkative as they are here on the board. The archives are loaded with info.

Good Luck
Steve

One other thing be careful with the Super A ,they will turn over easier than an 8N. Been there, but they are great tractors... R.M. In AL.

I agree with Jeb2n.. lots of neat differences with the red tractors.

One thing I like about my cub is the 'deluxe' seat, and the shifter is to your left.. and you have a real operatos platform.. you are not merely straddling the tranny but sitting to one side of it. Makes breaks and clutch easier to use. A 1 legged fellow might even be able to handle it with a bit of creative thinking.

I also like the hyds on the cub.. gives me a hyd front blade and belly mower... however without a 3pt lift. it is a 'dedicated' maneuer pusher and mowing machine...

If it is a great price.. go for it... an extra tractor is always handy..

I could be wrong, but I think the super A is a little smaller than the 8N in horsepower. We had a 140 that was just a later updated version of the super A and it was a handy tractor. Unless you have the optional 3-point retrofit kit, you will not like the 1-point "fast hitch" setup and it is somewhat awkward to get on/off the tractor. The nice thing is that you have front and rear lifts that are operated independant of each other and the offset motor give excellent cultivation viewing. They are very nice cultivating tractors and the belly mower is nice, but some of the implements are difficult to hook up. Remember that the N series was ahead of it's time and it took many years for the other brands to catch up to the N's versatility and ease of hooking up. Once you get around that, you will enjoy it. NO harder to work on than an N. OH yeah, I'm not sure if the Super A had it or not, but the 140 had power down on the lift also. handy for blade work.

I have a Farmall 200 which is one size bigger and a few years newer than the letter tractors (A,B,H,M) and I never had any trouble getting parts from my local International dealer. The engine sounds better than my 8N to boot. I also have an International 350 Utility that has easy parts availability also. On the A, the brakes probably have a lock lever on the brakes that you can flip with your foot to brake together or split the brakes. Doug.
