I agree with changing the oil. It is there to lube and protect a lot of expensive parts. I took off the lift cover and pulled out the pto shaft. Once the oil was drained it took less than 10 minutes to pull out the PTO shaft. The bearing on mine looked new so I put it right back in. Good luck.

Don..... ..if'n you park your tractor nose down ina ditch or sumptin', then you won't hafta drain your 5 gals of hydraulic fluid.

Howsomever, if'n it was me, I'd bite the bullet and do a full 1 3/8 PTO shaft replacement with 5 gals of Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil. 3 drains, 1 fill up by tranny shifter. You can also use the 60 yr old recommended 90wt gear oil, if you can find it..... .Dell

How's your tractor parts budget? Can you afford $120? If so, pull the shaft out as described below and replace the whole assembly with a new one from FNH or other parts suppliers. The advantage (other than having to mess with snap rings and pressed seals) is that you can upgrade from the 1-1/8" diameter pto your 8N was born with to the new standard 1-3/8" diameter. Then you can use modern implements without adapters. Just a thought.

I just did mine this past weekend and I'm a new 8N owner. It was a simple job. Be sure to reference an F04 manual for complete instructions and diagrams.

Drain the oil or hydraulic fluid first. All three drain plugs. The drain plug for my differential was dry, so I inserted my finger and found about a half inch of crud covering the drain hole inside.

Remove the 4 bolts holding the cover and pull the assembly straight out. It needed a little persuasion to break the gasket loose. I tapped on the cover, from the side, with the handle of my hammer.

The biggest challenge was removing the snap ring so you can remove the shaft from the housing. I used a couple of small screw drivers and some needle nose pliers.

The seal is press fit into the housing so it takes a little persuasion getting it out, and putting the new one back in. I found that the collar on my shaft needs replacing, but that will have to wait. I didn't have the part and needed to get my tractor back together.

I put a new gasket on the housing and now have no PTO leaks. My shaft collar was so bad that I'm expecting a leak at any time. It will probably be next winter before I replace the shaft sleeve and put in a new seal.

Good luck. Have some rags available.

I agree with Fred. Ain't no big thing. I would consider as long as you have dumped the oil etc. rebuilding the PTO as long as it's out with a new bearing and seals, and seal sleeve if needed, if in fact you are going to keep the tractor for awhile. I'm suggesting that if the bearing and or sleeve is really worn out, the new seal won't last that long anyhow. My $.02
