I've got a 1951 Ford 8N tractor I'm restoring and am confused about how to identify a correct replacement steering shaft. The shaft that was on this tractor is too long and extends about 3" past the end of the steering tube. I have two other 51's but don't want to tear the steering box to get the answer. The picture below shows the current shaft and an incorrect replacement I bought. The problem with the replacement is that the worm gear thread is opposite and the distance between the bearing races is 1/4" to short which allows 1/4" of up/down slack in the shaft when assembled. My guess is that my current shaft is from an NAA and the replacement I got is from an Early 8N (48-49).

Thanks in advance for your assistance..... ...

Steve

I just finished swapping an 801 series power steering unit onto Mrs OTG's Jubilee, and while she appreciates the PS, she squawked about the steering wheel being too high (she's just a little bitsy thing).

My point, the steering shaft and column on the 801 power steering is a little longer than the NAA.

The NAA Steering Shaft will work on the 8N.. As a matter of fact, the replacement shaft that you buy for the 8N, is the NAA Shaft. The only difference is that it is about 5/8" or so longer. The shaft comes with an extension collar so that the finished product looks professional. I do not know what the shaft is from that you have. Obviously, the bottom worm gear and bearing distances have to be the same to work properly.

Claus,
Thanks for the feedback. This tractor must have the replacement shaft in it because it has the extension collar you're talking about. It is about 3" longer than the correct shaft. Maby it was designed for people with long arms.

Thanks again..... .

When I posted the message I was expecting the picture to be below the text but when I view it the picture is first.
