When replacing the rear wheel seals on an 8N, will be necessary to remove the axle to replace the inner seal?

Also, will it be necessary to disassemble the hub and brakes or can they be removed still together as an assembly to get to the seal?

Thanks.

Dan, just replaced mine on my '49. You will have to take it all apart to get to the outer seal. Depending on your model, the pre-late 49 does not have the inner oil seal. If your seals have been leaking a while, you will have to replace your break shoes anyway, 'cause oily break shoes don't do much stoppin. Once you get your hub and collar off, the axle just slides out. Make sure that you replace the other cork seals along with your oil seal(s) too. Some shade tree mechanic left my cork seals out, and when I bought it it was leaking like a submarine with a screen door. That smith page is a great reference especially for the later style with 2 seals, and as usuall you can't beat the pics and step by step directions that you get in the I&T manual. As Dell says they are "$27 cheap", and I would add worth MUCH more.

Bill:

I was ttrying to replace the rear seals on my '47 8n last week, but after the nut & washer there was a "star" shaped retainer or washer tight to the hub. Can't budge it, appears to be threaded on to the axle. Don't see any mention of it in the parts catalog. I'm afraid to use the puller on the hub 'til I know if it's part of the hub or what.

Have you seen this?

Jeff

Here's a great reference for you. The Smiths provide lots of good info. Just go to FAQs and select rear axles. One of the choices will be to replace rear axle seals. Hope this tells you what you need Link

Just an FYI. I decided to take mine in and pay somebody to do them. He had a large hydraulic press and a torch and still had one h*ll of a time getting the hubs off. For the $90 per side I payed I figured I got off cheap. Best of luck, Lee

Thanks again guys.

Even though I have two gear pullers, I'll probably first try the prcocedure recommended on the Smith website, that is to loosen the center nut about one turn and then drive the tractor in a few figure eights to see if the hub will loosen.

It would seem that the hub being stuck to the axle is a good thing, that is the axle and hub aren't damaged and worn from excess play.

Smith's method will probably work, I just used a good puller, and an impact wrench. Hub came right off.
