The coulters not needed for most plowing circumstances. Fact I can't think of a thing they are good for here in Alabama. I have tried them with every condition you can imagine and always found them more trouble than they were worth.

If you have a heavy thatch on the land they will clog the plow ever few feet. If you don't have a heavy thatch and the ground is hard to begin with the coulters will not let the plow go into the ground.

Zane: I never plowed a single acre without coulters on the plows, mounted and pull type. We liked the big 18-inch notched coulters Ford offered in the late 50s and felt like they could plow through a bale of hay (which they couldn't, of course). I suppose coulters on an Alabama plow might injure a long-legged mule! Mike-Iowa

I think it might have to do with differences in soil. I very seldom see coulters in use here in eastern NC where we have mostly sandy loam/ yellow clay mix and leaf loam soils.

Some people take the colters off because they tend to plug things up at times. You should be able to plow ok without.

I've been using an old Oliver 2X14 for years without colters. It works well as long as the shares are in good shape. My soil has a fair amount of clay (channery silt loam according to the soils map).
