12 volt conversion problem

I converted the 6 volt sysgtem of a '47 2N to 12 volts. The tractor has a 6 volt front mounted distributor coil. When I start the engine the ballast resistor heats up and within a minute the engine shuts down. If I continue to try to start it the resistor becomes too hot to touch. The engine will only restart after the resistor cools down.
I replaced the old generator with a single wire terminal alternator - a rebuilt Remy Delco. I tested this for amperage with an old multimeter and received no reading.I'm not absolutely sure the meter was accurate though.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

I HAVE CONVERTED SEVERAL OF THESE TO 12 VOLT AND HAVE FOUND THAT I HAVE THE BEST LUCK WITH GOING TO A 12 VOLT COIL AND ELIMINATING THE RESISTORS.

I fried one 9N coil through agressive
jumping from a 12v system.

Most Tractor vendors sell the correct
step-down coil resistor (12v to 6v)
for about $4.

Alternatively, 12v coils for the 9Ns
are available too (around $35).

Mac..... ...ya' kant run a 6 volt coil on 12 volts. Ya'll overheat it and runt it.

You really need a 12 volt to 6 volt dropping resistor (RU-100 is popular) in series (like flashlight batterys) with your ballast resistor.

Lets hope you're lucky and your 6 volt frontmount ignition coil didn't melt the insulative tar and short out the turns and muck up your sparkies.

If you still have problems after you install the 12 to 6 volt dropping resistor, ask the N-Board. We want to help..... .Dell

Dell,
I took your good advise from a while back and bought a new 12 volt coil that doesn't need any resistors. The Advance Auto man knew exactly what I was talking about. Twenty bucks and another potential problem eliminated.

You need 2 resistors in series with a 12 v battery, lest ye cook thine coil for supper.
