'49 8N Timing Problem

My 8n (front mount distributer) has a timing issue that I can't seem to get resolved. She runs better when timing adjustment is pushed all the way down, but it simply won't go far enough to completely solve the problem. Is there any way that the shaft has slipped inside the engine? I realize that this model has a static timing system, with only minor external adjustments normally needed. HELP!!! I have had my tractor running poorly for 8 months. It all started when she quit, and I later found that the coil was my problem. I am afraid that something internal broke or slipped while trying continuously to crank her with a bad coil.

The Tune Up Guide on the frame on the left has a great section on distributor R and R. No pictures, but the narrative is good enough so that you won't need pictures.

Jim, The front mount dist is almost fool proof, mechanical pre-determined dwell (its not a lobe)

The Timing ADJ should always be in the center of its range, IF the centrifugal Advance is working
and not hung up.

Remove your Dist, Points, and the Clip Ring that holds the Plate (note location of Loop.) and the Timing adj screw. You can now pull the Plate & upper bushing up and off the shaft.

The Shaft is now free to be pulled UP and out of the Dist body. The upper and lower Shaft Assembly is connected together (in Rotation) by the weights & Springs of the centrifugal Advance.

You may have a broken spring or its just rusted up
so that the shaft is not returning (Rotating) to its starting(relaxed)position

Good Luck,

, I am no expert, I assume you removed the distributer when you replaced the defective coil.??? It is possible to install it wrong on a very worn shaft, there is a toung and grouve that should match up,If it is installed wrong you will be 180 degrees out, and you will never get proper timing. (12 oclock is where 6 oclock should be )

On old Chevy's with the window in the distributor to adjust the dwell angle, you would change the timing by changing the dwell (point gap). I would check and make sure your points are set correctly about .015". It's easy to take the front mount distributor off to set the points.

Did someone take the timing gears off after it quit to check out the problem? If so, they could have put them back in out of time.

I don't think the timing has jumped a gear. They are solid gears.

Maybe some of the other N gurus will have other ideas.
Danny

Sorry, no solution but I do have a related question. I can not find a timing make hole on the flywheel of a 48 8N im trying to help with. Where might it be hiding?
thanks
