I've decided to change the old 8N style (hydraulic) ram piston over to the NAA oring style. I know I need to soak the leather back-up ring in order to streach it over the piston, but should it be in water or oil????

Water is the way to go. Let it soak for about 15 minutes and then take it between thumbs and forefingers of right and left hand and lightly stretch it. Work all the way around the circle. Should pop right on then. Try to put it on dry and it'll break everytime.

Water works fine, and is not as slippery as oil. I suppose you could soak it in oil also, just makes it easier to go on without tearing when dry. Hope this helps.

I soaked mine for about an hour in hot water, then kneeded it for about 10 minutes. I also oiled up the piston so the leather would slide easier.
